💥 OUR LATEST IMPACT REPORT IS OUT!

Milestones:

PROVIDE
▪️Our highest-ever caseload: 85.5% resolved through our early stage, free legal support, the rest referred to CLIX Hong Kong 法律 · 公益 · 連繫社區 and/or public legal support schemes
▪️Over 50 NGOs now partner with and referr their clients to us

PREVENT
▪️Improved the legal literacy skills of 1,000+ attendees through our free community legal education sessions

PROGRESS
▪️Hosted the inaugural CLIX Awards
▪️Amplified the public narrative and understanding of free legal access as a vital social welfare and wellbeing enabler by launching the inaugural No-One Left Behind 絕不遺漏一人 Forum: https://lnkd.in/gvwyFiPw

🧡 Heartfelt thanks to the following for making this impact report happen:

▪️Mourant, for generously sponsoring the report’s management and design
▪️Sophia Hotung, for creating and donating the cover artwork, ‘Florist 花店’
▪️The Right Mix, and especially Sonja Wiederhofer, for their design talent and patience
▪️And last - and certainly not least - our immense gratitude to our partners, supporters, volunteers, donors and, of course, our wonderful, persistent and, frankly, quite extraordinary team.

Without all these people, none of our legal welfare, legal literacy and digital legal innovation work would happen - and without all that hard work and teamwork, our shared socio-economic impact would not be capable of being articulated and celebrated in this report. Truly, it’s never our work alone.

When she was accused of theft by her employer, Lily approached us for help.

Lily’s employer had (falsely) accused her of stealing an iPad and an iPhone. She was frightened as to what was going to happen, what it meant for her future work and saddened by their lack of trust.

When the employer demanded she hand over her HKID so they could report her to the police, Lily resigned.

Her employers then refused to let her fly home to the Philippines until they had found a replacement.

Lily came to Equal Justice. Our case workers reassured her that she was not obliged to surrender her HKID and explained some legal principles such as being presumed innocent until proven guilty. We also informed Lily about her employment rights, including her right to a paid flight home, and the immigration rules including the importance of not overstaying her visa.

Because her employers had been so verbally aggressive, we further empowered Lily by preparing her speaking notes for the difficult discussions with them.

We also helped Lily successfully to apply for an extension of her stay at the Immigration Department.

Ultimately, Lily’s employer agreed not to report her to the police. Lily returned to the Philippines, grateful to Equal Justice for guiding her through this traumatic employment experience.
