Today, we honour our Founder, Prof. Charles K Kao, on what would have been his 92nd birthday.

He taught us to view the world with curiosity and imagination, to challenge the constraints that bind us, and to believe that the impossible might just become reality.

In 2009, The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Prof. Kao the Nobel Prize in Physics “for groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication.” The citation also noted that: “Today optical fibres make up the circulatory system that nourishes our information society. Light flows in threads of glass, as thin as a hair, which carries almost all of the telephony and data traffic in each and every direction. Without optical fibres there would be no internet nor broadband.”

Indeed, without Prof. Kao’s visionary work, the internet and broadband as we know them would not exist.

The digital world we inhabit, defined by instant global communication, stands as a legacy and a living testament to his vision.

Thank you, Prof. Kao!

[CKKF 2025 Autumn Newsletter]

September is World Alzheimer’s Month. Each year, this initiative rallies individuals and organisations worldwide around a joint mission: to raise awareness, share knowledge and counter the stigma associated with Alzheimer’s Disease.

The campaign slogan for this year's World Alzheimer's Month is: "Ask about Dementia, Ask about Alzheimer's" - a call to promote open dialogues to encourage timely diagnosis, reduce stigma, and promote understanding of Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease….

…. On another note, in this latest issue we also look at the strong association between Dementia, Psychiatric Disorders and Loneliness. By recognising and acknowledging the interplay between these comorbidities in the path towards cognitive decline, we can then take the necessary steps to instigate preventive measure as well as address the challenges as encountered….

Words from the Chairman:

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day.

The campaign slogan for this year's World Alzheimer's Month is: "Ask about Dementia, Ask about Alzheimer's" - a call to promote open dialogues to encourage timely diagnosis, reduce stigma, and raise public awareness of Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease.

By talking openly, we can work towards earlier diagnosis, break down stigma, and better educate our communities. Our goal is to normalise conversations, share knowledge, prioritise the voices of those with lived experience, and support those affected.

So, know the risk factors and the symptoms, be aware of the signs, seek out available resources and ask questions. Every question counts, and every conversation matters!

Together, through open dialogues and shared conversations, let us promote compassion and understanding of Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease within our communities.
