HK Friends of Wild Boar

HK Friends of Wild Boar This is a community page dedicated to Hong Kong's wild boars, which are currently under threat by a sudden policy reversal instigated by the AFCD.

This page supports non-lethal methods to manage our wild boar population, and is strongly against culling.

Mount Parker Road lies mostly in a country park, plus what is the point of killing three innocent wild boars for the alleged foot biting by a different one?

The wild boars on Mount Parker are a timid bunch. They don't randomly bite people for no reason. The smaller ones sometimes sniff around shoes, if you let them.

Either exaggerated or provoked, and a shameless killing of three innocent animals. 🤬🤬🤬😢

14th February 2022 – (Hong Kong) In view of a recent spate of wild pig attacks at Mount Parker Road in the Eastern District, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) captured wild pigs in the area at noon today (February 14) to safeguard public safety. A veterinarian used a da...

I know this page is dedicated to Hong Kong's wild boars, but this latest news is simply too ridiculous and excessive to ignore. What a knee-jerk overreaction like usual! Utterly ludicrous response by the HKSAR Government, and now the AFCD gets to go on another culling rampage. 🤬 Poor tiny hamsters and friends. 😢

Guess what? Maybe people wouldn't be guiding wild boars back to the hills, etc., if they knew they wouldn't get killed by the AFCD if captured in urban areas. 🤔 Now, there's a thought. 🙄 So, let the guiding continue, and thanks to the people trying to save our wild boars! 🙏🏻

11th January 2022 – (Hong Kong) In response to an appeal made by an organisation to members of the public to guide wild boars away from urban areas, a spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department today strongly appealed to members of the public not to approach, or attempt t...

Happy New Year! Though sadly not such a happy one for Hong Kong's wild boars. 😢 According to the local Hong Kong Wild Boar Concern Group, since the AFCD's Nov 12 announcement that it would commence culling, a total of 28 wild boars have already been "humanely dispatched" (read: killed) as follows:

17 Nov - Shum Wan Road, Aberdeen, 7 killed*
21 Nov - Yau Ma Tei unloading zone, 1 killed
21 Nov - Pok Fu Lam Road gas station, 1 killed
28 Nov - Tin Hau Temple Road, North Point, 1 killed
30 Nov - Pak F*k Road, North Point, 2 killed
01 Dec - Shadow Bay Park, Repulse Bay, 2 killed
15 Dec - Po Hong Park, Tseung Kwan O, 3 killed
16 Dec - Ching Lin Terrace, Kennedy Town, 3 killed
16 Dec - Wong Nai Chung Road, Happy Valley, 3 killed
23 Dec - Kotewall Road, Mid-Levels, 5 killed

* Photo: The Shum Wan Road wild boars were intentionally lured onto the road with bread by the AFCD, which then proceeded to capture and kill 7 of them. 😠

This wild boar Christmas tree ornament by The Lion Rock Press is an absolute must-have this year! We thankfully managed to buy a pair before they sold out. Not the prettiest, lol, but a nice, festive tribute to Hong Kong's wild boars by a Hong Kong-based company. Happy holidays!

"Roni Wong from the Hong Kong Wild Boar Concern Group, who observed the operation, said it was 'despicable' for [the AFCD] to have used bread to lure the animals out of the woods. 'Of course, some of them were used to being fed, and they came down because they were not afraid [of people]."

Agree. Luring them out with food to their deaths is despicable, inexcusable and unnecessary, and goes against only targeting those wild boar that have the misfortune of peacefully wandering into urban areas. That is already a tragedy in itself, but to tempt them to come out so that they may be killed is appalling.

"[The] Hong Kong Wild Boar Concern Group says humane dispatch is just a means of taking the lives of innocent animals. It said it was baffled and angry about the new measure, stressing that the department is walking back on its suspension of hunting operations. It urged the authorities to maintain its control strategy of giving contraceptive or sterilisation treatment to the boars, while boosting public education on the treatment of wildlife."

A concern group has on Saturday urged the government to reverse a decision to capture wild boars in urban areas for humane dispatch. On Friday night,...

The sensationalised incident that triggered the sudden, knee-jerk policy reversal by the Agricultural, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) on how to manage Hong Kong's wild boar population, from previously non-lethal means (namely relocation and sterilisation) to the now inhumane "humane dispatch" (a.k.a. culling, or killing) of wild boars.

If what the article reports is true, note that the wild boar may already have been injured, and trying to gang up on a possibly injured, wild animal in order to somehow capture it is only asking for trouble. Should be common sense, right?

Other questions to ask are why our police are usually called upon to deal with wildlife situations in the first place, when they are clearly not trained for it, be it wild boar, snakes, and the like. Also, why was a tranquiliser gun not used in this instance, which could have avoided the attack, but so readily used for recent culling missions?

Bottom line is that Hong Kong wild boars rarely attack if unprovoked (the figures cited by the AFCD are barely worth reporting), but because of this bungled capture and resultant attack by a panic-stricken animal, which sadly fell to its death in its desperate attempt to flee, all wild boar are essentially being punished. Where is the humanity and justice in that?

10th November 2021 – (Hong Kong) At about 8pm last night (9th), there was an injured wild boar outside the parking lot of Fly Dragon Terrace at No. 26, Tin Hau Temple Road. The security guard who saw the wild board called the police. Police officers sealed off the scene and notified The Agricultur...
