Docomomo Hong Kong Hong Kong Chapter of the international Committee for the Documentation and Conservation of Buildings

Docomomo Hong Kong Chapter was established in August 2012 by a group of interested community members, each of whom is also affiliated with a number of the city’s major architectural educational and professional organizations, including The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), The University of Hong Kong (HKU), HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU-SPACE), the American Institu

te of Architects (AIA), the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA), and the Hong Kong Institute of Architectural Conservationists (HKICON). Docomomo Hong Kong is committed to enhancing public knowledge about modern architecture and urbanism while promoting the protection of notable examples of modern architecture in Hong Kong. As a former British colony and active international entrepôt, Hong Kong absorbed, supported, and produced a number of important modern architectural influences over the course of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its built environment represents a unique site of inquiry in the international history of the Modern Movement. Chapter members have begun to identify and map existing buildings, sites, and neighborhoods in Hong Kong.

On 25 October, we organised a walk “Tidal Stories” — tracing the coastal history of Tai Kok Tsui led by Design PY with Angus Hui .

We explored key sites—Hung Shung Temple, Chung Buildings (c.1970), Peony House (c.1960) and more—to understand Tai Kok Tsui’s history: its industrial past, shifting coastline, transformation of former dockyards into modernist housing projects, and recent urban renewal efforts.

Thank you all participants for joining us!

[registration link in bio!] BOOK LAUNCH: Mass Housing and New Towns in Hong Kong and Scotland: New Perspectives

Dear DocomomoHK members and friends,

Join us in the next event jointly organised by DocomomoHK and Society for Hong Kong Studies — a book launch on mass housing by Prof Miles Glendinning and Dr Alistair Fair .

Date: 8 November 2025
Time: 17:30-19:00
Venue: WYNG commons

This event marks the recent publication of three books that consider aspects of 20th-century (and early 21st-century) housing and planning history, in Hong Kong and beyond. The first, Hong Kong Public Housing: an Architectural and Policy History, is a landmark study by Miles Glendinning, whose Mass Housing: Modern Architecture and State Power sets developments in Hong Kong into wider contexts. The broader narrative of modern public housing is also a focus in the third title being launched, Building Modern Scotland: a Social and Architectural History of the New Towns, 1947-1997, by Alistair Fair and co-authors. Alistair and Miles will discuss the books, showing how theyoffer new insights into the history of modern planning and architecture, and thinking about the lessons for the future.

Please RSVP at the link in bio.
Look forward to seeing you!

[registration link in bio!] WALK: ‘Tidal Stories’ – Tracing the Coastal History of Tai Kok Tsui

Dear DocomomoHK members and friends,

Join us in the next event organised by DocomomoHK — a guided walk led by our member Emily Po and Quentin Yiu of , featuring historian Angus Hui.

Date: 25 October 2025
Time: 16:00-17:30
Meeting Point: Tai Kok Tsui Municipal Services Building

Reclamation has long been central to the shaping of Hong Kong’s communities and urban identity. Tai Kok Tsui, once a fishing village on Kowloon’s waterfront, underwent successive reclamation from the late 19th century through the post-war decades. These gave rise to dockyards, oil depots, and later light industries and dense residential estates. This walking tour explores key sites that embody Tai Kok Tsui’s layered coastal transformation, including the relocated Hong Sing Temple (1881), the former Cosmopolitan Dock (1875, now Cosmopolitan Estate), and Peony House (1960s) along Hoi King Street. Together, they reveal a layered history of industry, transport, and community, allowing us to read the ghost of the original shore beneath the modern city. Through this walking tour of urban archaeological sites situated in Tai Kok Tsui, participants trace the shifting coastline of Tai Kok Tsui that reflects the broader trajectory of urban development and coastal planning in Hong Kong.

Look forward to seeing you!
