西區墟市由明愛莫張瑞勤社區中心自2009年年底起籌辦。最初中心因應當時經濟環境，舉辦市集以支持區內基層人士自力更生，幫補家計，其後與參加者繼續關注中西區內外的墟市用地及相關政策，同時透過持續的墟市活動，成為凝聚社區力量，建立鄰里互助的平台。
