This July CAUCH Speaker Series is returning with its 5th session, exploring one of Asia's most significant underwater archaeology programmes. Join us on 5th July, Sunday, as Dr Patrick Gao Xiaoxu (高霄旭) from Shanghai University presents his talk on:

Capacity Building in Action: Development of China's Underwater Archaeology
行动中的能力建设:中国水下考古的发展

Drawing on nearly four decades of underwater archaeological practice in China, Dr Gao will explore how the country has built and strengthened its capacity for underwater cultural heritage research, management, and protection, tracing the evolution from early archaeological initiatives to a more holistic approach to underwater cultural heritage stewardship.

Talk: Managing UCH in Japan — How to Fill the Gap
Speaker: Dr. Randy Sasaki (Teikyo University, Japan)

Dr. Sasaki will discuss the key policy and legal gaps in protecting Japan’s Underwater Cultural Heritage (UCH), why many smaller local sites remain vulnerable, and how community-led projects and citizen science are helping safeguard underwater heritage.
