The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong is a non-profit group, established in 1974 by collectors and enthusiasts with a shared interest in Asian art and culture. The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong (OCS) was established in 1974, at which time the only requirement for membership was 'an interest in ceramics.' Over the intervening years, the Society has broadened the scope of its activities

to cover the full range of study, travel and writing that can be spurred by an interest in collecting or appreciation of Oriental culture and arts. One of the distinctive roles of the Society is that it brings the resources of collectors to the public and encourages collectors to open up their treasures and their treasury of knowledge and experience, both to other members and to the general public. In almost four decades, the OCS has provided a forum for the lively exchange of ideas and information, sponsored publications, held exhibitions, study sessions and travel programmes and has hosted an impressive array of distinguished speakers. In support of these objectives, the Society publishes catalogues of all major exhibitions as well as, from time to time, a Bulletin recording key papers presented to the membership.

Back in March, we have had the pleasure to have Dr Wang Guanyu, from the Art Museum, CUHK, to give our members a guided viewing of her exhibition, “Yuan Blue and White: New Discoveries from Jingdezhen”.

Jointly organized by the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Institute, this exhibition focuses on Yuan blue-and-white porcelain and highlights the archaeological discoveries from Jingdezhen over the years, including the most recently unearthed ceramic specimens from 2023 and 2024, supplemented by collections from the Art Museum and the Hong Kong Museum of Art.

Apart from the history of the blue and white wares, as shown in our images, the conservationists have taken great pains to reimagine how shards would have looked if the pieces were to be found altogether. This shows how technology and history meet in our current time.

Many thanks to Dr Nicole Chiang, of the Hong Kong Palace Museum, for sharing her groundbreaking research on the Qing "imperial art collection", challenging us to re-consider each of those three words in this concept as we now understand it. And, what a great crowd that showed up for her lecture, following up with great questions!

Many of you asked where you could find her book "Emperor Qianlong's Hidden Treasures"; it is currently available at the website of Hong Kong University Press.

The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong is delighted to welcome Dr Nicole Chiang to present a talk on her research into the imperial collection of the Emperor Qianlong.

The collection of the Qing imperial household during the Qianlong reign (1736–95) has often been seen as a display of power, an attribute of legitimate rule and a manifestation of the emperor’s desire to model and control aspects of the universe. However, evidence shows objects which entered the imperial collection through a careful selection process were in fact boxed up and removed from the public gaze. This talk will reconsider the description and definition of the collection and analyse the formation of the collection as a collective effort of many specialists, rather than the personal activity of the emperor. In addition, this talk will propose that the purpose of collecting during the Qianlong period was not to demonstrate imperial power, but to gather information essential to the ruling of the empire.

Dr Nicole Chiang is a Curator at the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the author of Emperor Qianlong’s Hidden Treasure: Reconsidering the Collection of the Qing Imperial Household. She began her career at the National Palace Museum in Taipei and subsequently served at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the Museum of East Asian Art in Bath. She has contributed to two British Museum exhibitions and taught at The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (SOAS) where she received her PhD. Her research interests include Qing imperial art and the history and theories of collecting.

The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong is delighted to announce a private preview of Bonhams’ Spring sale of Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art with Amethyst Chau, and of Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian Art with Dora Tan.

The tightly curated Spring auction showcases an array of ceramics, jades, and works of art, led by an imperial gilt-bronze figure of Amitayus, commissioned by the Kangxi Emperor probably for his grandmother, Empress Dowager Xiaozhuangwen (1613-1688). Further highlights include a rare Northern Song dynasty Cizhou sgraffiato meiping, formerly in the Chang Foundation, and a Ming-inspired blue-and-white moonflask from the Qianlong period. The sale also presents a selection of archaic jades, including a Han dynasty handled cup and several animated figures of mythical animals from the Zhichengtang collection assembled from the 1980s to 1990s.

This May’s Images of Devotion — a series of auctions inaugurated in 2016, focusing on Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian art — offers a glimpse into two thousand years of Buddhist art. Ranging from 3rd-century Gandhara to 12th-century Pala-period India, from 14th-century Nepal and Tibet to 18th-century paintings, the 47 works on offer showcase the distinctive artistic styles of each pivotal moment in this history. Here, civilisations met in the Himalayas and forged enchanting new idioms — Indian iconographic tradition, Nepalese and Tibetan craftsmanship, and Chinese aesthetic influences — as demonstrated by a rare bronze of Avalokiteshvara and a thangka depicting a goddess set against a Chinese-inspired landscape. The sale also features the Maitri Collection, a carefully curated group of Thai bronzes cast at the height of the Ayutthaya period.
