Every year, the Scouts visit native tree expert and conservationist Paul Melsom, on his extensive tree project behind Mui Wo on Lantau Island. Paul has been planting this forest for more than 25 years and we lend a hand to maintain the forest. But first, on 21 March 2026, we had to get there - carrying stream water and supplies up up up the hill. Once on top, we made tree guards to protect young saplings from rodents, grazing buffalo and grass cutters. We also cleared ferns and weeds from the hillside ahead of Ching Ming, a high season for forest fires. Along the way, Paul taught us about common trees we see in Hong Kong. We identified - horsetail, Chinese banyan, paperbark, turn-in-the -wind, bauhinia, camphor, elephant ear, Indian almond, a mimosa bush. How many can you recognise?

A 30 km hike over a Ginger Peak? A weekend trek involves much planning - team and personal kit, route, rest stops, tenting, menu, water and the thing that fuels everyone to put one foot in front of the other - snacks! So it's a real bummer when your snacks get snitched by creatures in the night. Extra bummer when your tent gets chewed through too. What's our takeaway from this? Plan for the unexpected and always carry extra snacks!

The weekend of 14 to 15 February 2026 say one of our Patrol Leaders take a team of new Scouts on a 30km adventure on foot through southwestern Lantau from Keung Shan to Tai O and Tung Chung. In addition to an rustling night with creatures sneaking around, we also reflected on the importance of travelling as a team, why everyone’s skills and efforts matter, and how to appreciate the amazing vistas. On special days such as these, one really can see all the way across the Pearl River delta from the crags and wilderness of Hong Kong to the shimmering towers of Macau and Zhuhai.

Last month, senior Scouts of the 36th Hong Kong joined the Venture Scouts at the 1st ever Silver Jubilee District Venture Scout Camp at Gilwell Campsite. It was a wonderful opportunity for the Scouts to get together with their seniors who have now moved on to Ventures. The camp was a weekend of friendly competition, camaraderie, and conversation - a way for the Scouts to decompress away from the stresses of school and home. They had a fabulous time!

Well done to everyone who participated in the Ultra Marathon trail running race last weekend on 24 to 25 January 2026! We were privileged to once again be part of this internationally renowned trail running race which is also the season opener for the World Trail Majors series.

About 40 Scouts, alum and parents ran Checkpoint 6 at Gilwell Campsite from 11:30 am till 01:15 am offering hot and cold food and drinks, comfort and cheer to the 1200 competitors completing this gruelling 93 km course that had over 5000 metres of elevation gain.

We met truly inspiring people and marvelled at their grit, determination and tenacity. We are in awe and can’t wait to do it all again next year!

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all our past and present Scouts and families! May all your (Scouting) wishes come true!!

It was in this spirit of celebration that old and new Scouts of the 36th Hong Kong gathered for our annual Christmas Mess Dinner on 12 December 2025. This is a fabulous tradition where we reward hard work (5 Chief Scout’s Awards!), celebrate the gaffs, and look back at what we've done this term - there was a lot! There was roast beef and port from the World Scout Moot, speeches and toasts, and promotions as we announced our new Patrol Leaders and Venture Scouts. Congratulations everyone! And now we rest, relax and get ready to explore and enjoy the great Hong Kong outdoors next year!

The 30 km camp is generally considered to be the toughest element of the .

But our senior Scouts worked hard to plan and prepare for their High Island Traverse 30km on 6 to 7 December 2025, which took them through some of the most scenic geological reserves of Hong Kong.

The reward for their hard work? A beach side camp under a stunning harvest moon, finding joy in music (The Hills are Alive…), forging friendships, and enjoying the best that Hong Kong has to offer. Not forgetting the “tunnel to America”!

Well done Scouts!

A missing floor, a garden that won’t grow, a letter that changes, a mysterious fall. All these and more legends were explored when the 36th Hong Kong visited King’s College on Bonham Road on 22 November 2025. What a rare opportunity it was to prowl the corridors and courtyard of this 100 year old school, one of the few pre-war buildings in Hong Kong that still functions as it was originally designed. Our Scouts met and mingled with the Scouts and Ventures of the 5th Hong Kong, who are one of the oldest troops in Hong Kong, played games, ate snacks and exchanged experiences which everyone enjoyed. Many thanks to the Leaders of the 5th for this generous invitation. We hope to have many fun adventures together!

What a glorious weekend it was for our first Cooking Camp held at Tai Tam Scout Centre from 15 to 16 November 2025! Supermarket to table was the plan so the Scouts, armed with shopping lists and budgets, went to Wellcome to shop for 3 meals - Japanese curry, rice, omelette and one-pot pasta. Did the Scouts survive their own cooking? Could this be the beginning of camp meals beyond spam and bacon? We will soon find out at our next camp in December!

On Saturday 15 November, our Troop headed to Tai Tam Scout Centre for our first cooking camp. By happy coincidence, we bumped into Scouts of the 150th Hong Kong who were there building bamboo structures for their Chief Scout Awards. It was a day of happy meet ups as we welcomed GSL Martin Wu, and later, ASL Victor Meng and Instructor Ana Chong to the camp grounds. Camps are irresistible and we love how they bring people together. Long may this continue!
