Our Summer Mess Dinner on 19 June 2026 was marked by some amazing announcements. We handed out a whopping 18 Pathfinder Awards, previewed a new Venture Scout Unit, appointed a new Assistant Group Scout Leader (welcome back Koko!), and thanked our outgoing, long serving Treasurer (thank you immensely Juntao!). The evening was a chance for our Scouts and now, Venture Scouts, to celebrate their hard work, relax and enjoy each others’ company. We also shared the event with Scout Leaders from the 29th Silver Jubilee, 150th Hong Kong and 192nd Kowloon Scout Troops, and heard from veteran Scouters Graham Price and Neil Bailey. What a wonderful way to close the year!

On 6 and 7 June 2026, our Scouts and Cubs signed up to join a heritage visit to explore the heritage right here in Hong Kong. On this journey, we were reminded that culture, as much as it is something we take in and experience, is also one day something to share and pass on. This weekend’s tour, with exquisite blends of Chinese and European built and intangible heritage was prepared once again by a team of Rover Scouts for their Scouts of the World Award voluntary service. Whether it was marvelling the sights of Chinese ancestral halls and intangible heritage displays, the locomotion of the Star Ferry, or the pleats of dim sum dishes, heritage and culture are never far from hand in Hong Kong!

Great shooting, Scouts! On 6 June 2026, Scouts from the 36th Hong Kong and 29th Silver Jubilee Scout Troops got together for the Marksman Course, where they learned to safely and accurately use airsoft pistols. It was a bit nerve wracking and scary but the Scouts learned to manage danger, held their nerve, and picked up the skills quickly! Well done Scouts!

In the second weekend of May, 9 to 10 May 2026, the Cubs and Scouts of the 36th Hong Kong had our Group camp at Pak Sha Wan. It was really quite special as it takes considerable planning to get everyone together for a whole weekend!

All participants earned their kayaking 1 star award that day, followed by a fun BBQ where everyone cooked their own meal.

We bunked on the newly renovated dorms, awakening fresh and ready for a morning of bonding and creativity. After playing games and making a beautiful painting of flowers, we went home with a gift for mum (it’s was Mother’s Day too!) and a heart full of memories. We hope everyone had a fabulous time!

On 25 April 2026, our Scouts and Cubs signed up to join a heritage visit to neighbouring Macao. The old city of Macao is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with exquisite blends of Chinese and Portuguese built and intangible heritage. The visit was arranged by a team of Rover Scouts for their Scouts of the World Award voluntary service. Our team explored just how close heritage is around us and how we can access heritage. On a poignant note, the team reflected on how we develop into cultured citizens of the world, inheriting a responsibility for the past and the future.

In our final pre-summer 30km camp, a team of experienced Scouts (soon to be Venture Scouts) journeyed across southern Hong Kong Island on 30 to 31 March 2026. Amid fluctuating weather with rain, mist, solar rays, and an open invitation for bugs, these South/West/Islander Scouts emerged from the tracks of Mt Parker to cap off a fruitful Chief Scout’s Award journey.

Starting at Wong Chuk Hang, the team evaded storms towards Blacks Link, followed by the hills overlooking Repulse Bay and Stanley. With conversations filled to the brim with ‘growth mindset’ and showing initiative, our team settled in for the night with Tai Tam campsite all to ourselves.

The final day was choppy and speedy yet packed with discovery in nature. Past Jardine’s Lookout and Mt Butler, the remaining team of four emerged via Boa Vista to stumble forth, recce, and navigate their way to Chai Wan. The pride in bringing an experienced team, in recognising the proficiencies and achievements gained until now, gave room for our Patrol Leaders to feel pride in their efforts. A parting thought was asked: ‘what could each feel and take ownership from this weekend’ - a vital question in an age of automation and passivity. Our Scouts answered the call in their own way, and may they Venture on with open mindsets to their future growth.

This year’s Silver Jubilee District Camp on 20 to 22 March 2026 saw a small and spirited Patrol of newer Scouts step into their worldwide family of Scouts here in Hong Kong.

Testing their feet at a new campsite out in Tai Tong, our Scouts saw Cubs, making baskets and going Easter egg hunting, and joined in with Scout Section activities, including an outing to Route Twisk for an orienteering circuit. Sundown was followed by a master-chef competition and campfires for each Scout Section.

Our Scouts learned valuable lessons in working together and the importance of their Scouting family as they step onwards into the wider world. We are looking forward to next year’s District Camp, as a golden jubilee celebration: 50 years of the SJD!

Every year, the Scouts visit native tree expert and conservationist Paul Melsom, on his extensive tree project behind Mui Wo on Lantau Island. Paul has been planting this forest for more than 25 years and we lend a hand to maintain the forest. But first, on 21 March 2026, we had to get there - carrying stream water and supplies up up up the hill. Once on top, we made tree guards to protect young saplings from rodents, grazing buffalo and grass cutters. We also cleared ferns and weeds from the hillside ahead of Ching Ming, a high season for forest fires. Along the way, Paul taught us about common trees we see in Hong Kong. We identified - horsetail, Chinese banyan, paperbark, turn-in-the -wind, bauhinia, camphor, elephant ear, Indian almond, a mimosa bush. How many can you recognise?

A 30 km hike over a Ginger Peak? A weekend trek involves much planning - team and personal kit, route, rest stops, tenting, menu, water and the thing that fuels everyone to put one foot in front of the other - snacks! So it's a real bummer when your snacks get snitched by creatures in the night. Extra bummer when your tent gets chewed through too. What's our takeaway from this? Plan for the unexpected and always carry extra snacks!

The weekend of 14 to 15 February 2026 say one of our Patrol Leaders take a team of new Scouts on a 30km adventure on foot through southwestern Lantau from Keung Shan to Tai O and Tung Chung. In addition to an rustling night with creatures sneaking around, we also reflected on the importance of travelling as a team, why everyone’s skills and efforts matter, and how to appreciate the amazing vistas. On special days such as these, one really can see all the way across the Pearl River delta from the crags and wilderness of Hong Kong to the shimmering towers of Macau and Zhuhai.
