English Society, AAHKU Official page of English Society, A.A.H.K.U., Session 2025–2026 English Society will continue to reach out to students and promote English in H.K.U.

Established in 1960, English Society pledges to serve as a bridge between the School of English and the students of H.K.U. Events including the English Festival, Annual Creative Writing Competition, and High Table Dinner are held throughout the year for students’ academic well-being as well as entertainment. Along with our Society’s newsletter LINK, the Society strives to benefit members and nurture the use of English on and off campus.

Beyond familiar horizons, what do you see?

As the sailor reaches for the distant line between the sun and the sea, and the astronaut gazes into the void, it is the ultimate goal, the point of no return, and a comforting constant, all at once. It is the silent observer of all our actions, the unfeeling lover which does not reciprocate—despite this, humanity reaches for the stars with the knowledge that we may not touch them within this lifetime, but perhaps we may in the next.

Through this year’s theme: Horizon, we wish to bring light to our wildest hopes, the strangest comforts, and the silent observers which stand by us as we venture forward into the dark.

The publication intends to explore one’s world—how experiences and the flow of life change us, limit us, and define us. How we, as humans, step beyond our pasts and flee into the future with a determination so strong it ripples throughout time. Or, how people are cloistered with fear, held softly by nostalgia, sung sweet lullabies by memories long forgotten—this theme intends to inspire contributors to explore their idea of boundaries, their wishes, and what holds them back.
