“Break the silence, stop the period shame!” chanted stakeholders and students of Bartica Secondary School and Three Miles Secondary School as they marched through the town of Bartica to raise awareness about menstrual health.

The awareness walk formed part of the 2nd Sexual and Reproductive Health Symposium, a two-day event led by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health in collaboration with several United Nations agencies, including UNICEF, UNFPA, UN Women, and PAHO/WHO. The initiative is supported by the Government of Canada.

The symposium aims to promote menstrual health awareness, challenge stigma surrounding menstruation, and encourage open discussions on sexual and reproductive health among young people and the wider community.

🇸🇷 National Mental Health Crisis Helpline Launched!

On June 5, the National Mental Health Crisis Helpline was officially launched—an important milestone in expanding access to mental health support and ensuring that individuals can receive timely assistance during moments of emotional distress and crisis.

This initiative, supported by UNICEF, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Psychiatric Centre Suriname (PCS), and PAHO, aims to strengthen help-seeking behaviors and connect people with the support they need when coping with mental health challenges.

Mental health is an essential part of overall well-being. By increasing access to support services, we are helping to create a society where seeking help is encouraged, stigma is reduced, and no one has to face their struggles alone.

📞 If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, call the crisis helpline 114.
