Drug use and abuse is a detrimental problem that is being neglected in Guyana. Individuals who struggle with addiction will face societal stigmas and pressure from their families to “get better” as they tend to suffer gravely as well. They will have a more difficult time securing employment and may find themselves in legal troubles they are ill equipped to handle. Additionally, they will be bearin
g the physical and emotional pain that comes with addiction, and the toll that it takes on one’s health. Yet, a large portion of the afflicted population is not afforded the opportunity to seek treatment within our community. Our passion for understanding the psychology behind addiction and it’s variety of treatments has undoubtedly led us to realize how important it is to instigate change, starting in our home country. Through our research and consultations with local rehab centres and organizations, much can be done to help these individuals. focuses solely on addiction in Guyana and will allow individuals more access to the help and treatment they need as well as promote drug abuse education and awareness. Upon establishing this, our key priorities will be as follows:
1. Hosting annual events in which to raise money as well as awareness in the community
2. Donating the aforementioned proceeds to existing rehabilitation centers so that they will be able to offset the cost.
3. Establish a scholarship fund for prospective patients.
4. Develop our own drug education, awareness and prevention seminar curriculums aimed at both students and business employees/ employers.
5. Create a social presence for the organization, and subsequently, visibility and a community dialogue about the need for accessible treatment in Guyana.
