Statement by the Association of People of African Descent (APAD) on the Appointment of David Hinds:
The Association of People of African Descent (APAD) is deeply troubled by the decision of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU Guyana) to appoint David Hinds as a Member of Parliament. Mr. Hinds has a long and troubling record of promoting bigotry and advancing racial stereotypes that target Afro-Guyanese. His rhetoric has not only demeaned our people but has also contributed to distrust and division within our society.
This appointment forces us to ask hard questions. Does the inclusion of Mr. Hinds reflect APNU’s true values? Why has Aubrey Norton chosen to elevate a man whose words have consistently undermined Afro-Guyanese dignity and agency? Are we to conclude that Mr. Hinds’ offensive behavior mirrors Mr. Norton’s own view, that Afro-Guyanese should only exercise their democratic rights if they do so in favor of his party?
These are not rhetorical questions. Every Afro-Guyanese citizen, and indeed every Guyanese, deserves leaders who honor their right to think, speak, and vote freely, without fear of being vilified if their choice differs from the political preferences of a party.
This appointment is not a reflection of the true Guyana. It undermines the values of equality, inclusivity, and respect that our nation must stand for.
APAD calls on APNU to reconsider this decision and to demonstrate through action that it values the dignity of all Guyanese. We urge the party to reflect on the harm caused by this appointment and to choose a path that builds trust, unity, and genuine representation for the people.
