To all our students, teachers, parents, and the wider education community, I wish you all a successful and inspiring school year!

To our young people: this is your time. A new school year is another opportunity to learn, grow, discover your potential, and take one step closer to the future you dream of.

There will be challenges, difficult days, and moments when you doubt yourself but don't give up.Your circumstances do not define your potential, and your past does not determine your future.

Dream boldly. Work hard. Ask questions. Speak up. Stay curious. And believe in yourself.

As we celebrate Education Month, let us remember that education is more than grades and certificates. It gives us the knowledge, confidence, and tools to transform our communities and build a better Guyana.

And to our teachers, thank you for your dedication, patience, and for believing in our young people. Your impact reaches far beyond the classroom.

Led by Chennai-based Space Kidz India and founded by Dr. Srimathy Kesan, Mission ShakthiSAT brings together 12,000 girls between the ages of 14 and 18 from 108 countries in what is described as a pioneering all-female global space technology initiative.

Wednesday’s International Youth Day is an opportunity to celebrate young people’s determination to make positive change and contributions to our world and collective future.

“Young people are already leading the way as organizers and innovators. But to go further, they need access to the skills that will shape the future – from critical thinking and problem-solving to digital literacy,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed.

Their knowledge and leadership strengthen democracy, advance human rights and contribute to inclusive and sustainable growth. They also play a vital role in protecting our planet—from Guyana’s Iwokrama Forest to climate-vulnerable communities in Fiji and Tuvalu.

On , we reaffirm the enduring value of Indigenous knowledge systems, our commitment to equal rights, greater opportunity and meaningful inclusion.

Indigenous Peoples and local communities, women and young people are not simply affected by the challenges we face. They are leaders and partners whose experience, ideas and agency must help shape Commonwealth decisions and action.

Guyanese writer Juvelle Atherley has won first place for Best Story in the Youth category of the Guyana Prize for Literature for his piece, "Saltwater Does Not Forget."
