Ethnic Relations Commission The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC)- Guyana is an impartial and apolitical, Constitutional agency.

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) is a constitutional body committed to promoting harmony and good relations among the people of Guyana, regardless of race, ethnicity, or cultural background. Established under Article 212 D of the Constitution of Guyana, the ERC works to eliminate all forms of ethnic discrimination while fostering respect, understanding, and cooperation among the diverse group

s that make up our nation. Through education, advocacy, investigations, dialogue, and community engagement, the Commission upholds its mandate to:

Promote equality and justice for all ethnic groups
Encourage tolerance and appreciation of cultural diversity
Investigate complaints related to ethnic discrimination or hostility
Monitor and guide media content to prevent incitement or bias
Support national unity and peaceful coexistence

At the heart of the ERCโ€™s mission is the vision of a Guyana where every citizen feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute to a just and unified society.

The ERC recently hosted a cybersecurity awareness training session facilitated by ICT Officers from the National Data Management Authority (NDMA), Ms. Melissa Vandeyar and Mr. Miracle Singh.

The interactive session equipped staff with practical knowledge to identify and respond to cyber threats, including phishing, smishing, ransomware, scareware, and Trojan malware, while reinforcing best practices for password security and data protection.

The ERC extends its appreciation to the NDMA for this valuable training initiative, which strengthens the Commissionโ€™s capacity to navigate todayโ€™s evolving digital landscape.

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) wishes to advise the public that it has concluded its investigation of a social media video involving Mr. Roopeshwar Mangal, popularly known as "TikTok Uncle."

The video in question, which was circulated on TikTok, contained language that the Commission determined to be racially derogatory, ethnically divisive, and contrary to the principles of harmony, mutual respect, and dignity that underpin our shared national identity as Guyanese.

Mr. Mangal has acknowledged that the remarks were made while he was under the influence of alcohol, which impaired his judgment.

He has further stated that the views expressed do not reflect his true character or beliefs and has offered an apology to all persons who may have been offended or distressed by his comments.

The ERC welcomes Mr. Mangal's willingness to accept responsibility for his actions and to address the matter publicly. The accompanying video contains his apology.

The Commission remains committed to promoting harmony, good relations, and mutual respect across all communities in Guyana and encourages all citizens to exercise responsibility and respect in their public communications, both online and offline.

Ahead of Guyanaโ€™s 60th Independence Anniversary, Commissioners and staff of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) gathered in the Commissionโ€™s Boardroom for a special observance reflecting on Guyanaโ€™s rich multicultural heritage and shared national journey.

During the observance, staff members from the different departments delivered presentations highlighting the historical arrival, contributions, struggles and enduring legacy of the various ethnic groups that together helped shape Guyana into the diverse nation it is today.
