⚠️ DISTEMPER ALERT – PLEASE VACCINATE YOUR DOGS ⚠️
Today, we received a report about a young puppy on Light Street, between Regent and Robb Streets, Georgetown. The caller indicated that the puppy was crying, appeared to be in pain, and may have been involved in a vehicular accident.
Upon assessment by our founder, Varsha Ramlakhan , it was discovered that this was not a road accident victim but rather a severe case of canine distemper. Sadly, the puppy was suffering significantly and had been left without care.
The Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) was contacted and will be humanely euthanizing this sweet boy to prevent any further suffering. Big thank you for their swift action.
We would like to remind the public that Guyana is currently experiencing cases of canine distemper, a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease that affects dogs. Distemper attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems and can cause immense suffering.
Common signs of distemper include:
• Discharge from the eyes and nose
• Persistent coughing
• Fever
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy and weakness
• Tremors, shaking, or seizures
• Difficulty walking or loss of coordination
Vaccination remains the best protection against distemper. While no vaccine is 100% effective, vaccinated dogs generally have a much better chance of avoiding severe illness. We also encourage pet owners to limit contact with stray or unvaccinated animals, especially during outbreaks.
If you notice a dog displaying signs of distemper, please contact a veterinarian, animal shelter, or animal welfare organization immediately. Early intervention may help prevent further spread of the disease and reduce suffering.
