This Amerindian Heritage Month, we proudly celebrate the rich cultural heritage, traditions, knowledge, resilience, and contributions of Guyana’s Indigenous Peoples. 🇬🇾

As Guyana commemorates its 60th Anniversary – Diamond Jubilee, we recognize that our national identity is deeply enriched by the history and living traditions of our Indigenous communities.

From the wisdom passed down through generations, to traditional crafts, languages, music, food, environmental stewardship, and community practices, Amerindian heritage remains an important part of Our Guyana.

At Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc., we are committed to supporting initiatives that promote education, empowerment, sustainable livelihoods, and improved opportunities for Indigenous communities, particularly women, girls, and families across Guyana’s hinterland.

This month, let us honour our past, celebrate our present, and preserve our heritage for generations to come.

Growing Food. Growing Resilience.
With food prices rising, especially for fresh vegetables, many Guyanese households are struggling to eat healthy while managing expenses.
That's why Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc. launched the Urban Agriculture Project in South Georgetown—teaching 20 families to grow their own food using container and urban farming techniques, right in the spaces they have.
Participants learned it all: soil prep, composting, germination, transplanting, crop care, and organic pest control—practical skills that cut reliance on store-bought produce and put fresh food within reach at home.
This isn't just about vegetables. It's about food security, resilience, and communities empowered with skills that last.
When we grow our own food, we grow confidence, resilience, and healthier communities.
Small spaces. Fresh food. Stronger households.

Today, Food For the Poor (Guyana) Inc. proudly joins the global community in celebrating the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, while paying special tribute to the Indigenous midwives whose knowledge, compassion, and dedication have safeguarded the health and well-being of generations.

Across Guyana's Indigenous communities, traditional midwives have long been trusted caregivers, preserving ancestral knowledge, supporting safe childbirth, and nurturing families with wisdom passed down through generations. Their invaluable contributions continue to strengthen communities and preserve rich cultural traditions.
