🎄✨ Spreading Christmas Joy Through Friendship and Culture ✨🎄

The Guyana–China Friendship Society was honoured to host a special Christmas event for children at the residence of the China Medical Team, celebrating the spirit of the season through culture, care, and community.

We were delighted to welcome children from Save R Kids Children’s Home and students of Windsor Forest Primary School for a joyful and memorable day.

The children enjoyed a rich cultural experience, including:
• A guzheng performance by members of the China Medical Team and students from RAYA Chinese Education Center
• A lively lion dance by the Chinese Association of Guyana
• Traditional provincial snacks prepared by the China Medical Team
• A Tai Chi performance by the Confucius Institute at the University of Guyana
• Hands-on cultural activities such as Chinese calligraphy and mask painting, facilitated by the Confucius Institute

Warm holiday greetings and well wishes were shared by the Hon. Prime Minister of Guyana, the Chinese Embassy, the President of the Guyana–China Friendship Society, and the President of the Chinese Association of Guyana, highlighting the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between our communities.

It is a pleasure to spread holiday joy and create a happy, meaningful day for the children. Seeing their smiles was the greatest gift of all.

The New Demerara River Bridge:
A Symbol of Progress and Friendship
**************************************
By Paul Cheong, President of the Guyana–China Friendship Society

The completion of the New Demerara River Bridge is far more than an infrastructural achievement. It is a bold statement of Guyana’s progress and a living symbol of the enduring partnership between Guyana and China. This bridge, stretching across one of our nation’s most vital waterways, is not only an engineering marvel, but also a bridge of friendship, trust, and shared vision.

This new bridge is set to transform the way we connect and grow as a nation. By easing traffic congestion, cutting travel times, and improving the flow of goods and services, it will enhance productivity and open new doors for regional development. Farmers will be able to transport produce more efficiently, businesses will expand their reach, and communities will benefit from greater access to jobs, healthcare, and education. The bridge will therefore stand as a catalyst for broad-based growth, ensuring that development is not just concentrated in Georgetown, but radiates across our regions.

Lessons Learned: Building Local Capacity
******************************************
Equally exciting to me, is the knowledge transfer that has taken place during this project. Guyanese engineers, technicians, and construction workers worked closely with their Chinese counterparts, gaining hands-on exposure to cutting-edge design and construction technologies. They’ve learned advanced techniques in project management, structural design, and modern bridge-building methods; skills that will remain with us long after the ribbon has been cut.

Importantly, this was not a one-sided exchange. I am sure that our Chinese partners also benefited from engaging with local engineers, learning how to adapt international best practices to Guyana’s unique terrain, river dynamics, and environmental considerations. This mutual exchange of knowledge underscores the true value of partnership, allowing both sides to grow stronger.

Strengthening Guyana–China Relations
***************************************
Projects like the New Demerara River Bridge deepen more than just our physical connections; they deepen the bonds of cooperation and friendship between Guyana and China. Each successful project enhances mutual trust and strengthens the framework for even greater collaboration. As Guyana continues its rapid development, particularly with the emergence of our oil and gas sector, the experience of delivering large-scale, high-quality infrastructure with China’s support demonstrates what can be achieved when nations work together in good faith.
This bridge lays the groundwork for future collaboration on even more ambitious projects, whether in renewable energy, advanced transportation networks, or industrial development. It signals to both our nations, and to the world, that Guyana and China are ready to take on larger challenges together.

As President of the Guyana–China Friendship Society and a direct beneficiary of this project, I believe the New Demerara River Bridge is more than steel and concrete. It is a promise of what lies ahead when cooperation is rooted in respect, friendship, and shared ambition. I commend the Government of Guyana, the Government of China, the engineers, and the workers whose tireless efforts made this vision a reality.

Looking forward, I am filled with optimism. This project is a foundation upon which we can build even stronger partnerships and tackle even greater challenges. Let this bridge stand not only as a monument to progress but also as a reminder of the limitless potential of Guyana–China collaboration. Together, we will continue to shape a brighter future.
