Now that the road construction in Wakapau Village will be undertaken by the Government of Guyana it is imperative that the Village move ahead with strategic planning. In 2018 the Village Council developed a 10 year developmental plan which projected the road network, a relocation of the Secondary School to the back lands, a Cottage Hospital, an airstrip and housing schemes, etc., which was immediately scrapped by the incoming Village Council. The lumber and block making projects which were intended to help residents build cheap homes were also scrapped or allowed to fail. We now see part of that plan becoming a reality today.

While Village Councils will change it is important that the development of the village be taken seriously and that is why the Village plan must be restored to see what has been achieved and what needs to be done.

Electricity and pure water supply are also important. We have moved from drinking our creek water due to the operation of many motor boats which have contaminated the creek, to digging ponds and storage of rain water in black tanks, yet sadly many rely on ponds which are not truly safe for drinking.

Many will oppose the relocation of the Secondary School and the Construction of a Cottage Hospital but as the younger generation buys more vehicles and become trained professionals only they will see the need for changes and development. There are already many trained mid/wives and nurses and many more are in training. Our Village needs to plan to bring them all back and have such a hospital ready for them to work.

In a brief meeting with residents yesterday, Minister within the Ministry of Public works pledged that road works will be done in the village. This road connects Koria and Wakapau. This contract, he said, “will be given to the community which will benefit residents as the money will remain in the community.” After the meeting, he and his team were taken on a village tour by the Toshao and some councillors to view and map the road network.

Residents of Mora, Wakapau are calling for “Creek” (currently blocked) to be cleared immediately. The area from Kamadankoro to Mora is used on a daily basis by the school boats, passengers boats and other private boats on a daily basis and this blockage greatly affects those boats. In what was thought was the work of D&I as that agency has already cleared the Koria Creek, the community was told by the Toshao in last Friday’s VGM that that area was not budgeted for. Residents of that section were under the impression that that work was mandatory but the Toshao explained he budgeted for a shorter route to the astonishment of the residents. Residents complained that he did not consult with them and furthermore is not fully representing them as he is strategically placed to do so. They made it plain to him that the clearing of the “Creek” is urgent and a priority and not to be disputed.

Residents of Wakapau Village

Please be informed that a Village General Meeting has been scheduled for tomorrow.

It is very surprising that the manner in which this meeting has been publicized has only been by word of mouth, a very important meeting as this.

“Thanks to the Village Council for its fullest support.”

Close to 30 of these on the dirt road between Waipaqua and Myrie, across a swamp for over a year now and despite constant pleading with our Village Council for it to be upgraded to date requests have resulted in no action taken. Furthermore the Village has two excavators, a truck, two tractors and two minibuses and although residents offered to do voluntary work just to fill holes no machinery or equipment has been made available instead a tractor has been given to a resident for his private use for several months now while residents plight continues. The failure of the Council to address this important matter reflects governance failures. When Council members are asked why can’t they intervene in such an important matter, the response is they have already made decisions in that regard at the Council level but seems not to know whose job it is to execute or to get things done. Our village has purchased a truck to service the Koria area but instead it is still sitting in the Wakapau area for months now. Who knows when it will ever reach its destination and be put to work.

This dirt road has been built mainly by self help and with no input from the Government. One would think by now after years in existence that the Council would have had the Government making input. This road serves a clinic and church in Waipaqua and a Health Post, school and over four hundred residents. Many residents have purchased cars, 4x4, ATS and motor bikes as a result of the road and to think this matter is not urgent is an insult to our intelligence. Residents have tried to fill the holes but were very ineffective without major machinery and equipment. So here we are with residents, who are very willing to work and a Village Council that lacks initiative or fails to give support

For the residents of Wakapau village.

Yesterday a team from ALT held a meeting with the VC and residents and presented a shape file for the extension of our village that was agreed upon by the Manawarin and Wakapau Village Councils. Here is a picture of the shape file. The VC is expected to send a letter of acceptance so that the process can move forward.

So here is list of deceased but whose names are still on GECOM list of “voters” from the voters lists in Wakapau Village. This is just one village. How many more villages have the same issue? Why is GECOM preserving the names of dead people? Some have died more than thirteen years ago? Why? Just why? Will someone ensure that those deceased vote?
