ABOUT US

Guyana Environment Initiative (GEI) is a youth-based organization that focuses on environmental awareness and advocacy. The organization was established in 2014 at the University of Guyana by a group of students, to foster an environmentally conscious population on campus. The organization expanded its reach across Guyana, taking the initiative to all three counties. The work of the orga

nization includes school awareness activities, practical environmental exercises, online campaigns, collaborations, and contributions to public policy- all concerning energy efficiency, environmental awareness, and climate change. Over the years, GEI has grown significantly in all facets, with the assistance of more than 60 volunteers during its lifetime, the organization has reached more than 8000 youth through school outreaches and youth-group engagements. The organization has also participated in and contributed to several national consultations on environmental policies and collaborated with like-minded organizations to widen its scope and reach.

How can the fight against climate change be just? 🀯
The climate discussion extends beyond the environment; it’s a matter of human rights as well.

Climate change threatens lives, livelihoods, and increases disparities. That’s why it’s so important to address the environmental issue while prioritising fairness and human rights.
Climate justice is necessary, for the people and the planet. πŸ§‘β€πŸ€β€πŸ§‘πŸŒ

The mural depicts a compilation of environmental messages, such as:

1) Mother Nature sustains the entire world, the trees and waterways of Guyana, contribute to the world's lungs.

2) Harnessing natural sources of energy, towards a low-carbon trajectory.

3) Highlighting some of the various alternative energy sources; WIND, SOLAR & HYDRO.

4) Humans are the central force in ensuring the earth is preserved.

Could you spot other elements in this mural that evoke other environmental messages?

This mural is located on the wall of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Guyana and was made possible through the collaboration with IAMovement, under the project 'Advancing Climate Democracy' funded by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF). GEI firmly believes in the power of education, and hence saw it as an ideal opportunity to execute this mural at a central location of Guyana's premiere University, to ensure that the minds being molded at the institution could be impacted by the messages of the mural.

GEI wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Dr. Paloma Mohamed- Martins for the support in making this idea a reality.

Artwork by: Silent Walls Mural Project by Niix & Nel. Thank you to the artist who exceeded the vision of this piece.

LET'S ALL DO OUR PART TO PROTECT THE EARTH!
