🌍✨ Three Villages. One Vision. A Future Protected. 💫🌎

Global conservation cannot succeed without Indigenous leadership, and on October 6, 2025, the world witnessed exactly why. 💪🏽💚

In a powerful moment of unity and vision, the communities of Maruranau, Awarewaunau, and Shea came together in Maruranau Village to launch something truly historic:

🌿 The Deep South Giant Armadillo Conservation Area, 150,000 hectares (570 square miles) of precious forest and savannah, now protected by the very people who’ve been its stewards for generations.

For the first time, these three Indigenous communities have signed an Inter-Community Conservation Agreement, a bold commitment to:
🛡️ Continue community-led research and protect biodiversity
👣 Monitor their lands and safeguard wildlife habitats
📚 Educate youth on sustainability and traditional knowledge
🌱 Implement long-term village sustainability plans that balance people and nature

This is not just about protecting Giant Armadillos and Giant Anteaters or even just one ecosystem; it’s about honouring Indigenous knowledge, defending our shared planet, and building a future where people and nature thrive together. 🌎🔥

This landmark initiative is part of the SGP-funded project “Community-managed Research and Conservation of Giant Anteaters and Giant Armadillos in the Eastern Deep South Rupununi.”

Huge gratitude to our partners, South Rupununi Conservation Society and Conservation International- Guyana, and the unstoppable Dream Team behind this work. 🙌🏽🌟

To the inspiring leaders, rangers, residents, and students of Maruranau, Awarewaunau, and Shea, THANK YOU. Your courage, commitment, and leadership are lighting the way for us all. 💫
