Last month, IFES's Program Manager, Danielle Anthony, held a consultation with the members of Suriname's Independent Electoral Bureau (Onafhankelijk Kiesbureau, OKB). The OKB is an oversight body that ensures that general, free and fair elections are conducted as well as to declare the results of those elections.

The discussion focused in part on IFES's ongoing efforts in Suriname under our Promoting Inclusive Representation and Reporting in the Caribbean (PIRRC) project which aims to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and to sensitize the media to report on issues affecting these communities using a rights-based approach. During the consultation, OKB also shared their priorities and needs as the country prepares for its national elections in May, 2025.

Suriname recently introduced significant reforms to its electoral system through amendments in 2023 and 2024. These changes are designed to enhance equality in voting power and proportionality between votes cast and seats allocated to political organizations. The amendments also include administrative updates aimed at improving efficiency and effectiveness in election management.
