Out and available, this book of readings on current economic and social issues affecting Guyana. Personally, it has been highly stimulating and gratifying working with co-editors Drs. DaSilva-Glasgow and Khemraj, and I acknowledge the diligent and thoughtful contributions of all the chapter authors. Ms. Bronwyn Geyer and the rest of the team at Palgrave Macmillan must also be congratulated for the efficient ex*****on to bring this work to fruition. Others who made invaluable contributions along the way include Percy Hintzen, UC Berkeley emeritus professor.

It's my earnest hope that reading these chapters stimulate further reflection and contribute substantially to our understanding and ability to meet development challenges. Please read, share and enjoy!

Dr Keith Rowley, Trinidad and Tobago PM recently told a Trinidad & Tobago gathering that “failure to amend the Constitution means that the country is not evolving”. He remarked on the number and importance of amendments to the US Constitution. This statement applies equally to Guyana. Even as proposals from political leaders focus on various other national priorities, the need to reform the Constitution to reflect the demands for a developing Guyana remains a pressing imperative. The establishment of the Constitution Reform Commission is an opportunity. We must redouble efforts to advance the reform agenda in a constructive direction.
There’s no dearth of views regarding Guyana’s situation. The question is, what are we going to do? The Electoral Reform Group (ERG) is issuing an invitation for interested persons to join us. We know that many persons would like to contribute concretely to the cause of constitutional and electoral reform. We are looking for persons with constructive ideas and commitment.
ERG is a non-partisan group. All are welcome, irrespective of political persuasion. However, although we are happy to engage the political parties, we cannot admit persons who are currently publicly active partisan political activists.
Interested persons may post responses to this group or directly to [email protected] or telephone number (+592-642-2855), if preferable. All responses are welcome: comments, suggestions, nominations of interested persons, etc.
