Guyana Association of Professional Social Workers
The Guyana Association of Professional Social Workers extends heartfelt congratulations to our President, Ms. Debbie Hopkinson, on her exceptional contribution as a panelist during the World Refugee Day 2026 online discussion hosted by the International Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies (MIDIAS), University of Guyana.
Ms. Hopkinson’s presentation reflected the highest standards of professional social work practice, demonstrating deep knowledge, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to advancing the rights and well-being of vulnerable populations. Her insights on the protection of migrant children highlighted the critical role that social workers play in promoting human dignity, social justice, inclusion, and access to essential services for all.
As social workers, we recognize that migration presents complex challenges that require coordinated, rights-based, and child-centered responses. Through her thoughtful contribution, Ms. Hopkinson reinforced the importance of strengthening protective systems, advocating for equitable access to services, and ensuring that migrant and refugee children are afforded the opportunities and support necessary to thrive.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to the distinguished panelists, Ms. Sharon James, Mr. Cardel Hunte, and Dr. Loria-Mae Heywood, whose expertise and perspectives enriched the discussion and underscored the value of collaborative action in addressing the needs of migrant and refugee communities.
The panel served as a powerful reminder that solidarity is more than a concept—it is a call to action. It requires governments, institutions, civil society organizations, and communities to work together to safeguard the rights of migrant children and create environments where they can live safely, develop fully, and realize their potential.
We are proud of Ms. Hopkinson’s leadership and her continued advocacy for vulnerable populations both nationally and regionally. Her contribution exemplifies the values and principles of the social work profession and brings honour to the Guyana Association of Professional Social Workers.
Congratulations, Ms. Hopkinson, on a truly outstanding presentation and for representing the profession with excellence.
