We’re excited to be part of the MAD COLLAB Block Party alongside so many incredible local brands, artists, organizations, and changemakers working to uplift our island community.

At , our mission is rooted in protecting what matters — our soil, water, ecosystems, and future generations. Events like this remind us that stewardship can happen through collaboration, culture, education, and community connection.

Big si yu’os ma’åse’ to and everyone involved in creating spaces where local ideas and community impact can grow together.

Let’s continue being good stewards for our island. 🌿

As we wrap up Stewardship Week, we’re reflecting on the many ways our community cares for Guam’s soil. Healthy soil supports the food we grow, helps local farms stay productive, absorbs rainwater, and reduces erosion that can impact our rivers and coral reefs🪸

Throughout the week we shared tips on soil stewardship and ways to improve soil health—from watering soil properly to support food production, to understanding how off-roading can affect fragile soils and why driving responsibly matters. We also talked about how digging deeper doesn’t always solve soil problems, especially in Guam’s limestone landscapes, and why improving soil quality at the surface is often the better solution.

Here are even more ways caring for soil means caring for our land, food, water, and future.

Thank you to the farmers, volunteers, and community partners working alongside the Northern Guam Soil and Water Conservation District to protect Guam’s soil for the future ✊🏽

Because when we care for soil, we care for our island 💚

Tree roots help hold soil in place, reducing erosion and protecting the health of our rivers and reefs. Their leaves add organic matter to the ground, building stronger and more resilient soils over time.

Across Guam, community members—from farmers and landowners to students and volunteers—play an important role in planting and caring for trees that support healthy landscapes. Efforts supported by groups like the , , .forestry, , and help strengthen this shared stewardship of our island.

When communities plant together, we grow more than trees—we grow healthier soil and a stronger future for our island 🇬🇺

Plant a tree, support local conservation programs, and be part of Guam’s stewardship story 💪🏽

When vehicles drive over fragile soils or steep slopes, they can break apart the top layer of soil and create deep ruts.

On Guam, those ruts can quickly turn into erosion channels during heavy rains, sending sediment downhill and eventually into our rivers and reefs.

By staying on designated trails and avoiding wet or vulnerable areas, off-road enthusiasts can help protect Guam’s soil and the ecosystems connected to it.

Healthy soil keeps our land stable, our water cleaner, and our reefs thriving. Responsible riding helps keep it that way.

By adding compost to the ground, we return nutrients and organic matter that help soil hold water, support plant growth, and reduce erosion.

In tropical environments like Guam, building soil organic matter is essential for keeping land productive and resilient.

Local resources like and help make compost and soil amendments accessible for farmers, landscapers, and home gardeners working to improve soil health across the island.

Healthy soil starts with what we put back into it. Compost is where that cycle begins 🔄

Whether you compost at home or source it locally, adding organic matter is one of the best ways to care for Guam’s soil 💚

In Northern & Central Guam, much of our land sits on limestone bedrock. Using an auger to drill through limestone may create a deeper hole, but it doesn’t actually improve the surrounding soil conditions that plants depend on.

Roots still need healthy soil with organic matter, nutrients, and proper structure to grow and hold water.

Instead of relying on deeper holes alone, improving soil health—by adding compost, mulching, and building organic matter—can create a better environment for plants to thrive.

Healthy soil is built from the top down.

Focus on improving soil quality, not just digging deeper.

Watering plants starts with watering the soil💧🌱

Healthy soil acts like a sponge—absorbing and holding water so plant roots can access it over time. When soil has good structure and organic matter, it reduces runoff, supports plant growth, and helps prevent erosion.

Simple practices like watering slowly, adding mulch, and building soil with compost allow moisture to soak deeper into the ground instead of washing away. In Guam’s tropical climate, caring for soil this way helps keep gardens, farms, and landscapes thriving.

Healthy soil holds water. Healthy water starts with soil.

This NACD Stewardship Week, we’re celebrating the foundation beneath our feet—soil. Healthy soil supports the food we grow, helps filter our water, and keeps our island ecosystems strong.

Throughout the week, the Northern Guam Soil and Water Conservation District will be sharing simple stewardship tips you can practice at home and in your community—from protecting soil during cleanups to planting trees and improving soil health in your yard.

Small actions can make a big difference when we care for the land together.

Follow along all week as we celebrate stewardship and the role we each play in protecting Guam’s natural resources 🥳
