We Carry the Ocean: Anecdotes from a Pacific Islander is a storytelling series dedicated to preserving and amplifying the voices of Pacific Islander diaspora communities, exploring identity, displacement, resilience, and the enduring connection to home through honest, in-depth conversations.

Manny Crisostomo is a Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist whose work bears witness to history through the quiet power of observation. In We Carry the Ocean: Anecdotes from a Pacific Islander, Manny represents the role of the observer, someone who carries the ocean in images shaped by patience, empathy, and truth.

As a Pacific Islander behind the lens, Manny’s lived experience informs how he sees the world and what he chooses to preserve within the frame. His photographs document moments of struggle, resilience, and humanity, capturing stories that might otherwise go unseen. Through decades of visual storytelling, Manny has carried the weight of responsibility that comes with witnessing, honoring people, place, and memory, proving that the ocean we carry also teaches us how to look, listen, and remember.

What began as a vision in 2015 is now becoming a place for connection, rest, and celebration.

The Filipino Community of Guam Bench Project is a reminder that when a community comes together, something meaningful takes shape, something that welcomes everyone.

With a long-standing history of helping build and contribute to the spaces at Ypao Beach Park, the Filipino community continues its legacy, giving back to a place that brings people together.

A place to sit. A place to gather. A place to belong.
