In preparation for Super Typhoon Champi, the American Red Cross mobilized 90 disaster responders to move supplies, coordinate with partners and open shelters to house residents through the storm.

Maxine Seo Thomas is one of many residents who is seeking shelter again alongside her four daughters and two grandsons. Both Typhoons Sinlaku and Bavi took off the roof of her home. This time she made sure to tie her roof down with a chain before heading to the Red Cross shelter at Machananao Elementary School. She says it is difficult because “we were fixing it up and then another one comes.” For each disaster response the Red Cross has been on island providing assistance to those impacted.

“It’s really helpful for me we got help from the Red Cross” Maxine said. “It was a lot; they feed us, they give us tarps, help us fixing our house. It was a big help.”

After the storm, the Red Cross will begin to provide emergency supplies and will assess the damage to see how the organization can best support the community this time.

The public should continue to take precautions and can find open Red Cross shelters on https://rdcrss.org/3flrLn8, the free Red Cross Emergency app or by calling the local Red Cross Guam chapter at 671-472-6217.

Today on World Mental Health Day, Dr. Leilani Ahina-Dawson shared some tips for disaster responders and disaster-affected individuals on how to care for themselves and their community.

When disaster strikes, people need more than food and shelter, mental health support is also vital to recovery. Dr. Leilani has been a licensed psychologist for over 20 years and a Red Cross Disaster Mental Health Manager since the 2023 Maui wildfires.

She says her key message is to make space for honest conversations and be there for one another.

“As we support each other’s mental health, we need to be compassionate, empathetic listeners when others are sharing, and the focus is not on problem solving but on validating someone’s experience. Just being a witness to somebody’s challenge can be so affirming and so supportive.” – Dr. Leilani Ahina-Dawson

Being present, listening with empathy and letting someone know their experience matters can help them feel less alone. This World Mental Health Day, take a moment to check in with yourself and the people around you. Listen with compassion, make space for honest conversations and remember that sometimes, simply being there is enough to make a difference.

This home fire safety week take time to create or review your home fire escape plan! Remember to include at least two ways to exit every room in your home.

Here are a few simple steps when making a plan:

1) Select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from your home, such as your neighbor’s home or landmark like a specific tree in your front yard, where everyone knows to meet.

2) Take time to discuss the plan with everyone in your household and practice it twice a year. While practicing your escape plan, teach children what a smoke alarm sounds like. Talk about fire safety and what to do in an emergency.

3) Place smoke alarms on each level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas.

4) In addition to testing your smoke alarms once a month, change the batteries at least once a year, if your model requires it.

5) Check the manufacturer’s date of your smoke alarms. If they’re 10 years or older, they need to be replaced because the sensor becomes less sensitive over time. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

If your alarm is in need of replacement, email [email protected] to place your request and a Red Cross representative will schedule a time for a free installation.

Our team was proud to join Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and other first responders to mark Fire Prevention Week. On average, the Red Cross responds to 65,000 disasters a year. The vast majority are home fires.

Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half. During the month of October, the Guam Red Cross will be installing smoke alarms for anyone who is in need. If you would like to receive a free smoke alarm, please email [email protected] to place your request and a Red Cross representative will schedule a time for installation.

Recently the Guam Red Cross gathered to recognize Mr. Wesley Beda Moyembe with the Red Cross Lifesaving Award Certificate of Merit for his extraordinary actions on April 28, 2026. Before reporting for duty that day, Mr. Moyembe stopped to help at the scene of a serious car accident, immediately stepping in to provide lifesaving CPR until emergency responders arrived. His quick thinking, skill, and willingness to act made a difference when it mattered most.

The Certificate of Merit is awarded to individuals who use the skills and knowledge learned through American Red Cross training to save or sustain a life. Wesley's actions are a powerful reminder of how preparedness, courage, and compassion can make all the difference.

Thank you Wesley Beda Moyembe for your service!

Hope Starts With Us.

Thank you to the American Cancer Society for the amazing opportunity to be part of this year’s Relay For Life. Your Guam Chapter of the American Red Cross joined our island community in celebrating cancer survivors, honoring the strength of caregivers, supporting those still fighting, and remembering the loved ones we carry with us everyday.

At our booth, we invited our community to help us build a Red Cross made entirely of hope by answering one simple question: “Who or what gives you hope?”

The Red Cross is proud to serve our island community during disasters, through preparedness education, lifesaving training, and support when it's needed most. But sometimes, service simply means being present, standing beside our neighbors, and sharing in the moments that matter.

Happy National School Picture Day!

Once upon a time, these were just Guam kids with big dreams and no idea what the future had in store.

One dreamed of being a superhero, another dreamed of dancing on the world’s biggest stage. Another dreamed of winning the Superbowl!

Today, they’re helping make our island community stronger through the American Red Cross.

You never know where life will take you. Maybe there's a future Red Crosser in a school picture being taken today. We can't wait to meet them.

In honor of International Youth Day, let's look back at the extraordinary youth volunteers who stepped up during Typhoon Sinlaku!

These young volunteers remind us that age is no barrier to making a difference.

Hear directly from them why they decided to join the Red Cross and what inspires them to help their community.
