Ütz B'ey Guatemala, formerly known as Project Somos.

Ütz B’ey means The Right Path in Kaqchikel, the Mayan language spoken in Aldea Chivarabal - the community we’ve called home since 2009. Our new name was a gift from this community, a reflection of our shared vision: to guide children toward their right path in life. At Ütz B’ey Guatemala, we guide children onto the right path, into adulthood an

d to achieve their dreams. From age four to 24, we provide free, quality education, nutritious meals from our onsite organic farm, a space to dream, and ultimately, career guidance and job opportunities. Our programs are shaped by the communities themselves, building strong, lasting bonds between families, local leaders, and us. We equip children and families by fostering safe, loving communities where they can access quality education, nutrition, health, and economic opportunities. We imagine a Guatemala where every child grows up healthy, safe, and loved, within strong communities that nourish their potential and expand their future.

Carla is only 4 years old, but she already has the confidence of a born leader 👑

At the beginning of the year, she had very little interest in English. She was much more interested in chatting with her friends and doing things her own way.

But little by little, curiosity took over. She wanted to understand. She wanted to join in. She wanted to learn.

Now, Carla proudly greets us in English each morning, counts to ten with confidence, and even encourages her friends to practise speaking too. At home, her family tells us she gives them English lessons 💛👩‍🏫

It takes a village to raise a child, and with Carla being supported by her parents, family, community, and us, she'll be celebrating her learning for years to come 🌱

Every child learns differently.

Some learn by reading.
Some by listening.
Some by playing, moving, and asking questions.
And some through hands-on experiences that bring learning to life.

At Ütz B’ey Guatemala, we embrace all of it. Because learning isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s something to be explored, felt, and experienced in different ways, every single day. And that's how we create a love of learning, and a confidence in our abilities ❤️

A clean space is a shared responsibility 🌸

Caring for our environment is part of everyday learning. Through clean-up activities, children learn to take pride in their surroundings, respect their environment, and understand their responsibility for their community.

The newest member of our tech team, Miguel, age 4, is full of curiosity 👨‍💻

From his very first day, he’s shown a real interest in computers, confidently turning them on and using the mouse with surprising ease.

Every click, every small success is met with a smile, a moment of excitement, and a sense of pride that fills the room.

Confidence and curiosity are growing side by side for Miguel, and the joy he finds in discovering something new is simply contagious 💛

It’s hard to imagine what it feels like to try and learn when you’re hungry.

How do you focus on reading, writing, or even something as simple as 2+2, when your body is crying out for food?

That’s why, at Ütz B’ey Guatemala, we provide around 20,000 lunches every year.

Every day, children receive a meal that is nutritious, filling, and made with care. No child should have to learn on an empty stomach.

Because before learning can begin, a child needs to feel safe, nourished, and ready 💛

Little Julio has always been full of energy, curious, sociable, and kind.

But there was a time when that energy was hard to manage. He struggled with boundaries and controlling his impulses, which sometimes made things challenging.

With patience and support from his teachers, especially Profe Ricardo, Javier began to understand himself more. Little by little, he learned to pause, reflect, and grow.

Today, he is more aware, more in control, and continues to show his kindness by supporting others.

A reminder that with the right support, every child can grow 💛

2026 has brought an outbreak of measles in Guatemala, and although our community nurse, Ana, has been promoting measles vaccinations since January, we are now seeing a drop in attendance and we suspect some of the kids may have contracted measles.

We don't separate a child’s education from their health and wellbeing. Supporting children means understanding the full context of their lives, and how we can support the families and communities during moments like this.

Marelyne is liaising closely with Ana and the Ministry of Health, supporting in any way we can to communicate with children and parents so they can understand the importance of vaccination and care.

A year ago we didn't have an operating health clinic, now we're supporting the community to protect themselves against preventable diseases 💉
