On Thursday we visited Xunah Kaab for our Adventure Camp Day 4 activity! Xunah Kaab' specializes in all things related to bees, from stinging to non-stinging bees, honey production, and bee conservation. The kids learned about the parts of a bee, the life cycle of a bee, reproduction, and the physical differences between stinging and non-stinging bees. We took a tour to see the hives of the 5 native, non-stinging bee species they have on the property. There are a total of 33 species in Guatemala! We even heard from Gael, fourth generation bee extraordinaire. The tour ended with a conversation about the various uses of honey, from both stinging and non-stinging bees, and a taste test! Maltiox Xunah Kaab' for having us!

We romped through coffee plantations and corn fields to arrive at our favorite grassy spot on the shores of Lake Atitlán for Day 3 of our Adventure Camp! We read about ecosystems, biodiversity, and biotic + abiotic factors. We used what we learned to color and draw biotic + abiotic factors on a landscape of the lake! Stay tuned for a recap of Day 4!

We kicked-off day 2 of our Adventure Camp at a park on the shore of Lake Atitlán. We reviewed the stories of Patana'x and Xe Kuku´ Abaj and the legend of Xocomil. We then talked about what San Juan La Laguna looks like in the present day and identified some important landmarks + some of the current modes of transportation. We then spent some time designing our own tuk tuks and camionetas before climbing the rock wall, playing basketball, and swinging on the playground.

Day 1 of our 5th Annual Adventure Camp is in the books! We had 11 kids join us to learn about Guatemala, its departments, and the history of San Juan La Laguna. Our group heard from Lacho about the original name of the area that we recognize as San Juan today, Patana'x, and later, Xe Kuku´ Abaj. Both of these names signify a water recipient to collect and store water. We spent time envisioning what Patanax and Xe Kuku´ Abaj looked like and drew our ideas in our Adventure Journals. We concluded Day 1 with a walk around San Juan and heard about the legend of Xocomil,

The natural phenomenon of the Xocomil occurs when the warm winds coming from the South collide with the colder air masses that come from the Altiplano, forming whirlpools that agitate the waters, causing large waves on the surface of the lake. The legend recounts the love story between a young man and woman, whose love was not accepted by their parents. When escaping, the couple encountered Lake Atitlán, but could not swim, causing them to drown. It is said that the gusts of wind that appear every day over the lake are the spirits of the couple.
