Today, August 9th, commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. There are over 476 million indigenous people in the world, living across 90 countries. Indigenous peoples are inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and ways of relating to people and the environment. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures. Guatemala is home to 24 principal indigenous peoples, with nearly 60% of the country's population identifying as indigenous.
