I am one proud Papa down here in Guatemala. Yolanda came to us with only an 8th grade education. We enrolled her into a trade school, but also into a weekends only high school which she has been doing for the last two years. She told me a few days ago that she has earned her high school diploma and will be participating in a graduation ceremony in November.

I cannot tell you how amazing and overwhelmed I am by how hard Yolanda has worked to get to this point. I am so deeply proud of her, and I told her that as well. Believe me when I tell you that she is a literal walking miracle.

Please keep lifting up Yolanda in prayer that she will stay grounded and continue the process of getting ready to enter society and no longer be at risk.

We had a special young lady come to visit Rocsana's Hope two days ago. For now we will call her "Sophia" as she is still a minor and a ward of the state here in Guatemala. For the same reasons, we must blur her face until she is no longer a minor and when she comes to us on her birthday. She is currently at a government orphanage and her 18th birthday is approaching in the next few months. She is at extreme risk to end up living on the streets once she leaves her orphanage as she has no famiy or friends to turn to and help her. Selvin and Luckey told me that she is a great fit for our program and definitely cannot be allowed to hit the streets at all. So she will come to us on the day that she turns 18 years old.

After a busy summer of traveling, sharing, speaking, and working hard to help raise more awareness about the ministry of Rocsana's Hope, and what it is we really do to help save girls in Guatemala, not to mention about a month of being down there and getting many important things done, we realize that it has been a while since we last published and put out a newsletter.

We have just completed our August/September newsletter update, and it will be coming to a mailbox or email near you. We will also be including two of our new RH brochures and a few of our new business cards should anyone wish to share them with others.

Hang tight folks. All of this is on the way!!

This is the QR Code that anyone can share with anyone who is interested in watching the video about "The Faceless Girl". It is now also on our new business cards and new brochures. It will also appear in both the next email newsletter getting ready to go out and the hard copy newsletter that we also send out. Feel free to share with with anyone. Thank you so much to anyone who wants to help spread the word and raise awareness about Rocsana's Hope and what we are doing in Guatemala.

This has been almost a year in the making. We have completed working on a new video for Rocsana's Hope and have just now published it for public viewing on our YouTube channel. For anyone who might not know, or have never heard this story, the title of the video is called "The Amazing Story of the Faceless Girl". It is told in interview form by Stan and Denise Nelson being interviewed by their oldest son, Andrew Nelson. It includes many photos and some videos that very much enhance the telling of the story.

For anyone who has never seen it, or if you have heard the story shared by Stan personally or through regular Facebook posts, newsletters, etc., this is going to be, we truly believe, a huge blessing. We invite all of you would like to watch to do so, and perhaps be willing to share the link with anyone you may know who you feel or think might be interested in learning more about the ministry of Rocsana's Hope and what it is we do in Guatemala.

There is also a QR code that you can download and share so that anyone with a smart device can scan the code, and they will be taken straight to the video on our YouTube channel. We will share that in a companion post to this one.

We hope and pray that the video meets or exceeds your expectations. May God bless you as you watch.

We have in the last few months experienced victory, then defeat, and victory again.

In July we welcomed Stefani Sarai into our home and program. I got to meet her after she was there for a few weeks and immediately I could see that she was just a delightful young lady. She was orphaned at 6 months old and grew up in two different orphanages. I always try to take each new girl on a walk around our big front yard. I share with them the story of how Rocsana's Hope was started and why. It was a wonderful walk and talk for about an hour. She also shared with me some of her experiences, several of which are too hard to even think about. We both cried, and I encouraged her to stay committed to our home for as long as it would take. She said she would.

Then, out of nowhere, a painful defeat.

After I returned to the US, I got word that Stefani no longer wanted to stay at Rocsana's Hope. She wanted to try going out on her own. I was just heartbroken. I really thought she would be one of the ones who makes it. So it hit us pretty hard. Then just a few days ago, I received a FB message from her, and here is what she said:

"Hi Papa Stan. this is Stefani.
I just want to ask you to please give me a second chance.
I know I made a bad decision but I ask you to give me another chance. Please Papa Stan. I promise you that I will not do that ever again and I will try hard to show you that I do want this great opportunity."

After speaking with Selvin and Luckey, we offered her that second chance that she was asking for and Selvin and Luckey picked her up at the main bus terminal in Guatemala City, and she has been back for two days now. I am told she was very apologetic but so happy to get her second chance. And I told her that my heart was just overflowing for her decision to come back.

It may not always work out the way we hope, but it is times and situations like these that we continue to fight the battle to save as many girls as possible. And I guarantee you that all we do and go through pales in comparison to these kinds of amazing victories. Please keep praying for this precious young lady.

Rocsana's Hope is very happy and excited to be able to welcome "Estafany Sarai" into our home and ministry in San Lucas, Sacatepequez, Guatemala. Today is her very first day and so we ask that you pray for her as she makes the transition from life on the streets to a place of security. For the first time she now has a brighter future with real hope.

Diana is so special and an amazing young lady. When she was still at Rocsana’s Hope, she would come by the office every night to make sure I didn’t fall asleep in front of my computer. And if I did, she would wake me up and tell me it’s time to go to bed. Denise would usually already be in the room and so she would walk me down to make sure that I didn’t turn and go back to the computer and she would always say daddy you need your rest.

So I was messaging back-and-forth with her over this last week and I was up pretty late and she saw that and then sent me this post:

“Thank you dad but what are you doing up so late at night you should go to bed and rest, please go to bed and rest.”

I cannot begin to describe the gratefulness that I feel in my heart for God allowing us to save these girls, and if you aren’t aware of it, Diana was the very first girl.

I walked by a disabled lady laying on the sidewalk in Antigua. She did not have anything below her knees. But I could God was telling me to go back and give her some money in her little thing she uses. for people to put money into. Two hours later, I walked by another disabled person. This man was also begging for help. This time I was not going to miss what I knew God was asking me to do. So, I gave him some money and then asked if I could pray with him, and of course he obliged. When I was done praying, there was a young American woman who stopped when she saw us praying. She had just a huge smile on her face, said God bless you both so much, and asked if she could take a picture of me and the man together so she can show back in the US and challenge people to be more giving to people who really do need the help. Below are the two photos, one of the woman, and the one that the girl took and sent to me.

When things can challenging, God has a way of reminding me what it is all about.

This precious young lady faced the real threat of what is happening in Guatemala 33 times every day, being taken in kidnap fashion off the streets and put into s*xual slavery.

THIS is why we are here. It is also the simple reminders of how grateful these girls are.

Eating Dinner, Estefania asked for my phone. I did not know for what, but I just had feeling. After a few minutes she handed it back to me. She used translator on my phone to tell me this:

"𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮, 𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐚 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧, 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐬 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨. 𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡. 𝐈 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞. 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭. This is Alejandra. She has been at Rocsana's Hope for just over a year. She came on May 15th of 2023. She has worked hard at her studies and right now she is currently studying towards earning a Chef's Degree at Intecap, which is one of the most prominant vocational schools in Guatemala. Intecap has a great record of an extremely high percentage of their students who are able to find work within the fields of their studies. She has been a student there now for five months and we hope that in approximately another eight to ten months, she will be graduating with an earned Chef's Degree from that school. She will be able to take that and turn right around and get a job at any bakery of her choosing as she will then have the credentials on her resume that will qualify her to be hired. This is a huge industry in Guatemala and she will have the chance to get a very good job, especially by Guatemalan standards.

She has a very pleasant disposition and always has a smile on her face. She is aware of the fact that being with us at Rocsana's Hope is a huge blessing and benefit that most girls in Guatemala will never have the chance to experience or take advantage of. She is so wonderful and I know she is deeply thankful for her opportunity to be at Rocsana's Hope.

Giving Hope to the Future

The genesis of Rocsana’s Hope was born out of the recognition of the need for a full-time ministry that helps young girls who have been orphaned and have reached the age of 18 and are being required to leave their orphanage. Generally, these girls are NOT yet ready to enter into, and function in, Guatemalan society. A vast majority of orphanages in Guatemala and Central America do NOT have a strategic plan in place for these precious young ladies or any type of comprehensive program in place to help them transition into their society and culture as a functioning adult. Sadly, most of these girls almost immediately become victims of the street, or worse, they are caught up by gangs or other people who wish to enslave them into human trafficking and other forms of exploitation. We are here to stop that from happening and to bridge the gap!

  • Every day 33 people become entrapped in s*x trafficking rings in Guatemala alone.

  • S*x trafficking is fueled by a “social tolerance” of children being sold for s*x work, a business equal to 2.7% of Guatemala’s GDP.

  • Approximately 57% of the 48,500 victims of s*x trafficking in Guatemala are children, an industry that is estimated to be worth $1.6 billion a year.
