Unidos Para Los Animales

Unidos Para Los Animales We are an animal welfare organization based in Antigua, Guatemala. United for Animals is a small animal welfare group based out of La Antigua Guatemala.

Our goal is to increase the welfare of animals while decreasing the number of unwanted dogs and cats through high quality, low cost spay/neuter and vaccination clinics and education. Our focus is sterilization and vaccination of owned and free-roaming animals. We operate in many communities around Antigua, bringing low-cost, high quality spay and neuter and vaccination services to these areas with our mobile clinics.

Today was Mini Clinic Thursday! 🐾❤️

Another:

7 female dogs
2 male dogs
3 female cats
1 male cat

were spayed/neutered and vaccinated today!

We organize these small clinics every single week, and together they make a huge impact. Thanks to this program, we are able to help more than 500 dogs and cats each year.

By doing this, we can support rescuers, help prevent more unwanted litters, and improve the lives of so many street dogs and cats in our communities.

Thank you all for your ongoing support. Because of you, this work continues every week. 🐶🐱

After our last post about so many emergency cases, we definitely haven’t been sitting still.

A friend who rescues dogs brought us a mama street dog she thought was pregnant and unable to deliver puppies. Sadly, it turned out to be something much more serious. The poor girl had more than 6 liters of fluid inside her abdomen. She is suffering from ascites, a severe condition where fluid builds up in the abdominal cavity and can become life-threatening.

Our vet drained 6 liters of fluid from her belly over two days, and she is now receiving medication and being closely monitored. She still has a road ahead of her, but she is finally more comfortable.

We also rescued another female street dog who had previously been spayed but was attacked and bitten by another street dog. Her wound became infected with screwworms. She was cleaned up immediately, treated, and now everything is healing nicely. She is recovering safely in a temporary home.

And the work continues. Last Thursday alone we spayed:

4 female dogs
1 female cat
1 male puppy

We also had another little cat scheduled, but she was still too small for surgery, so she’ll come back in a month when she’s ready.

Thank you for your unconditional help, support, and love for Unidos. Because of you, we can keep showing up for these animals and continue this work every single week. ❤️

Happy 35th Birthday to our amazing vet, Franco! 🎉🐾

We are so grateful to have you on our team. Your dedication, compassion, and care make such a difference every single day — not only for the animals you help, but for all of us who get to work alongside you.

Wishing you a year filled with happiness, success, good health, and lots of wagging tails! Thank you for everything you do. 💙🎂

Our main mission is spay and neuter. We talk about it often because we know it is the only way to stop the endless cycle of suffering before it begins. Every dog sterilized means fewer puppies born into hunger, abuse, sickness, and life on the streets.

But here in Guatemala, the reality is heartbreaking.

Every single month we receive desperate messages asking for help. Photos and videos of dogs suffering, abandoned, injured, forgotten. And every time messages comes in, we know another animal is depending on us.

Thanks to our incredible volunteers, compassionate vets, and supporters like you, we are able to say yes to many of these dogs.

Just last weekend and this week alone, we helped a dog suffering from a severe screwworm infection, accessing a street dog with a painful perianal hernia, treated a dog attacked by other dogs whose untreated wounds became infested with screwworms, provided vaccines for a puppy rescued from the market, and a dog suffering from a large abdominal tumor.

Some days are incredibly heavy.

It is painful to see these animals suffer so deeply. We wish we could save them all. Together with our vets, we carefully assess every case and make the hardest decisions, including when euthanasia is the most humane way to end unbearable suffering.

There are moments when we feel overwhelmed. Moments when our hearts break over and over again. But we keep going because these dogs have nobody else.

They cannot ask for help. They cannot speak for themselves. They only have the people willing to care enough to stop and help them.

That is why we are reaching out to you today.

If you are able to donate, even a small amount, it truly makes a difference. Your support helps us continue emergency treatments, rescue dogs in critical condition, provide medication, surgeries, vaccines, and give these animals a chance they otherwise would never have.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for standing with us and with the dogs of Guatemala.

With gratitude,
The Unidos Team in Guatemala.

This week has been incredibly busy!

On Tuesday, we traveled to a small village called Vuelta Grande with our vet, Franco. Together, we spayed and neutered 18 animals—14 female dogs and 4 cats.

We also tried to help a dog from Santa María de Jesús who was in very poor condition. It truly broke our hearts. He was suffering from severe screwworm, among other issues. Our vet did everything she could, but his suffering was too great, and the difficult decision was made to let him go peacefully. (Last picture 🥹)

Do you remember the three puppies from Santa María de Jesús that came to our clinic two weeks ago? Sadly, one of them didn’t make it, but the other two are improving. Yesterday, they both received their first puppy vaccinations!

Today was also our mini Thursday clinic, where we spayed and neutered another 16 animals—9 dogs and 7 cats.

We have more to come tomorrow, but we’ll share that update next week. We might need a little bit of your help soon… 💛

Meet Oreo!

He’s the sweetest boy you’ll ever meet… though not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer. Oreo lives on the streets between Calvario and El Rastro, where some kind people look out for him, feed him, and occasionally even give him a ride.

But Oreo has one big problem—he thinks porcupines are teddy bears. He genuinely believes they’re meant for cuddling.

We know Oreo well. He’s neutered, vaccinated, and last year—after one of his “hugs”—we helped remove a face full of porcupine spines. And you won’t believe it… last Saturday he tried again. So yes, another trip to the vet.

We’ve explained (more than once!) that porcupines are not for cuddling, but Oreo clearly needs something even better—a loving home where he can stay safe and out of trouble.

Would you like to be Oreo’s teddy bear?

Let us know—we’d love to help connect you with him.

What a day!! 🐾💙

Yesterday our amazing team hit the road again to San Martín Jilotepequez with our wonderful friend Cristi—and what a success it was! With our full crew of vets and volunteers, we spayed and neutered an incredible 113 dogs and cats! 🙌

✨ 62 female dogs (including 11 street dogs!)
✨ 11 male dogs
✨ 21 female cats
✨ 19 male cats

And for the little ones not quite ready yet—we gave 3 puppies their vaccines to help them get off to a healthy start 🐶💉

We were also so happy to welcome first-time volunteer Steven Rumpler to the team! 🎉

Huge thanks to Cristi for the fantastic organization that made it all possible. Days like this remind us why we do what we do—so much impact, so much teamwork, and yes… a lot of fun too!

We’ll be back soon—thank you all for your continued support! 💙🐾

It’s puppy time again… 🐾

We were recently contacted about a momma dog and her three puppies living in very poor conditions in Santa Maria de Jesus. They are extremely underweight and suffering from serious skin issues. We’ve already started helping—providing flea treatment, deworming, and food support for this humble family.

Over the next couple of weeks, we’re also working to catch and help even more dogs across Antigua. Our goal is to safely catch and spay/neuter 2 mommas and 9 puppies, and to continue caring for these 3 little ones until they regain their strength. Once they are healthy, they will be vaccinated and eventually spayed, along with their momma.

There is still so much work to do, and we truly need your help to make it happen.

If you would like to support these puppies and give them a chance at a healthier life, we would be incredibly grateful for any contribution.

Every bit helps. ❤️

Thank you for being part of their journey.

And just like that… we did it again.

Today, 15 animals were spayed and neutered in our mini clinic!

Among them were 6 dogs from Santa María de Jesús who didn’t get their chance during our last big clinic in March. Today, they did. And that matters.

One case especially stayed with us:
A sweet dog who had to cancel last week due to a serious bladder stone. She came back today. Not only did we successfully remove the stone, but we were also able to spay her at the same time.

Because follow-up isn’t optional for us—it’s a priority.
This is what real impact looks like: Not just showing up once, but coming back, following through, and making sure no animal is left behind.

We couldn’t do this without your continued support.
Thank you for standing with us—always and forever. 🙏🐶🐱
