Sonido del Movimiento Sonido del Movimiento is designed to provide tools for children to counter the effects of the poverty and violence within the Northern Triangle.

nce. Most of the children served by Sonido del Movimiento "live" in conditions that many of us could never imagine. Obtaining basic needs like food and security are principal concerns within these communities. It is not absolutely clear how to address the larger problems. But it is clear that the larger issues victimize these children the most. Sonido del Movimiento's mission intends to meet these kids where they are and walk along side of them as the children, themselves, develop into solutions to their community's struggles. And while the basic needs of food and security are of vital importance so, too, is the child's ability to grow emotionally, spiritually, and mentally healthy. Children can be both healed and heard using music and dance. Therefore, this Movement seeks to provide an effective, subtle, and playful means to building on the strength and talents the children already possess. We hope that you join us in our walk to serve the greatest gifts to this world.

Our Story

We believe that every kid should have the chance to be a kid. Sadly, many kids around the world are forced to grow up quickly due to poverty, violence, and challenges within their families. SDM strives to give kids the space to be kids: to express themselves through music and dance, to be wild and crazy or graceful or reserved, to have a safe place to be themselves. Through music and dance kids strengthen resiliency, emotional expression, an ability to cope with trauma, and other tools that will help them thrive, and they also have a chance to simply be kids, to play and sing and jump in the freedom of childhood.

Sonido del Movimiento began as a pilot project in Xela, Guatemala, in January 2016. Since then, we’ve focused and expanded our work, but our mission has stayed the same: to use music and dance with at-risk children to provide tools of resiliency, an ability for expression, and community building.

Sonido del Movimiento means “the sound of movement,” and as an organization we hope to promote movement in multiple senses of the word: not just the movement and freedom of dance, but a movement of kids equipped with tools of resiliency through dance and music, kids who may have lived through trauma but still have a sense of self-confidence, identity, purpose, and future. Each one of these kids is deeply valued, in God’s eyes and in ours, and we believe the work of caring for these children emotionally, mentally, and spiritually is important beyond words.
