From August 24 to 26, two communities on Guatemala's Pacific coast made progress in their community strengthening processes. In Las Lisas, Santa Rosa, the Flor de Mangle community apiary kept growing: two new queen bees were introduced and two new hives were formed, bringing the total to 38 active hives.

Meanwhile, in Sipacate, Escuintla, the community group defined new internal roles and carried out the sixth biological monitoring of mussels at seven points along the estuary, gathering key data on the health of this ecosystem.

These milestones reflect the commitment of coastal communities to conservation and to strengthening their livelihoods, work made possible thanks to the support of 2X Global.

This year, more and more children and young people are falling in love with the ocean through environmental education. On August 27, the Shark Club of San Cristóbal, Chiquimulilla, took part in two new workshops on marine ecosystems and shark reproduction.

This educational process is made possible thanks to the support of New England Aquarium.

During the session, participants learned about the different reproductive modes of sharks and the importance of the hammerhead shark in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems, reaching an 85% comprehension rate by the end of the workshop.

Thanks to the support of The Summit Foundation , the Ki'il Sarstoon Beekeeping Group continues to strengthen its technical capacities and business skills. From August 24–28, members participated in the fourth digital marketing workshop in the community of Barra Sarstún, Livingston, where they learned how to promote their products, connect with customers, and manage orders directly from their mobile phones.

As part of the ongoing support provided through the project, the group also received 20 complete beekeeping boxes, an important investment that will help expand and strengthen their apiaries, increasing both production capacity and long-term sustainability.

These efforts are helping create new opportunities for local families while promoting sustainable livelihoods linked to the conservation of Guatemala’s coastal ecosystems.

First record of the San Blas skate Dipturus garricki (Bigelow and Schroeder, 1958) in the Guatemalan Caribbean Sea.

This study documents, for the first time, the presence of this species in Guatemala and in the western Caribbean. Before this work, only 19 specimens had been documented in scientific collections.

This finding was made possible thanks to landing-site monitoring and close collaboration with artisanal fishermen from El Quetzalito.

We are especially grateful to the fishermen of El Quetzalito for their support of our elasmobranch monitoring program, as well as to The Rufford Foundation , and Luis von Ahn Foundation for supporting our research projects.

During the week of August 20, the Mundo Azul Foundation team conducted a series of interviews in the markets of Puerto Barrios and Livingston, Izabal, as part of the project carried out in collaboration with Save Our Seas Foundation.

Throughout the visit, the team spoke with Seafood traders to gather information on the supply chain and trade relationships surrounding fishing activity in this region of the Guatemalan Caribbean.

In total, seven interviews were conducted, an important step toward better understanding how these products move from the point of capture to the point of sale, and toward strengthening marine conservation efforts in the area.

Change happens through teamwork, and Save Our Seas Foundation was key to making it possible. We are always grateful.

Mundo Azul Foundation and 2X Global are bringing environmental education and community development to two regions of Guatemala.

From August 18 to 21, in Las Lisas, Santa Rosa, more than a hundred students took part in the "Benefits of Bees" workshop, learning about their role in pollinating mangroves and their economic potential through products like honey and propolis.

Meanwhile, in the village of Barra Sarstún, Livingston, Izabal, the team supported the Ki'il Sarstoon Beekeeping Group in managing their community apiary, strengthening their skills for the sustainable care of their beehives.

A joint effort driving education and productive development in Guatemala's coastal communities.
