In celebration of World Bee Day, Fundación Mundo Azul carried out environmental education activities during May in schools from Las Lisas and Sarstún as part of the “Flight of the Bee” campaign.

Through environmental rallies, flower planting, and interactive activities, children and youth learned about the importance of bees and other pollinators for biodiversity, healthy ecosystems, and food production.

These activities helped strengthen environmental awareness while inspiring future generations to value and protect pollinators and their habitats.

We thank 2XGlobal for supporting initiatives that promote environmental education and pollinator conservation.

At Mundo Azul Foundation, we work with coastal communities to strengthen beekeeping as a sustainable livelihood that links conservation with community well-being.

Bees play a vital role in pollinating mangroves, ecosystems that protect coastlines, support marine biodiversity, and provide essential benefits to local communities. By protecting bees, we also help conserve mangroves and the people who depend on them.

Through our Adopt a Beehive campaign, you can support the Ki’il Sarstoon Beekeeping Group and become part of a positive impact that benefits both nature and livelihoods.

In schools within the community of Sipacate, workshops were held on the ecological importance of sharks, with the aim of strengthening knowledge about their essential role in marine ecosystems and promoting their conservation.

During the activities, participants learned about the importance of sharks for maintaining ocean balance and reflected on the main threats these species face, as well as the need to promote actions for their protection. These experiences helped strengthen participants’ environmental awareness, fostering attitudes of respect and commitment toward the conservation of sharks and marine-coastal ecosystems.

We thank the New England Aquarium for making this initiative possible and for supporting environmental education for the conservation of marine biodiversity.

In commemoration of World Oceans Day, the Ministry of Environment held an environmental awareness and education event focused on highlighting the importance of conserving marine and coastal ecosystems.

During the event, Elisa Areano, Executive Director of Mundo Azul Foundation, gave the talk “Living Oceans, Strong Communities: Marine Conservation that Transforms Lives,” sharing experiences on how ocean protection generates environmental, social, and economic benefits for communities.

We thank the Ministry of Environment for the invitation and for promoting these spaces for dialogue and reflection that strengthen our collective commitment to the conservation and sustainable use of our marine resources.

Today, we celebrate Father's Day!

Fathers play an important role in shaping the values, dreams, and futures of the next generation. Through their guidance, support, and example, they inspire us to care for the people and the world around us.

At Mundo Azul Foundation, we recognize and appreciate all the fathers who encourage curiosity, respect for nature, and a commitment to protecting our oceans and environment.

We are excited to share the publication of our latest scientific article: “Shark species composition and catch variability in Guatemala’s artisanal Pacific fishery: A call for spatial and temporal management.”

Based on eight years of fisheries monitoring (2017–2024) along Guatemala’s Pacific coast, this study documents the landing of nearly 25,000 sharks from 14 species, with the majority of catches dominated by juvenile and early life stages of threatened species. Our findings highlight the importance of coastal habitats as critical areas for young sharks and emphasize the need for science-based management measures, including spatial protection and seasonal conservation strategies.

This work contributes valuable information to support the implementation of Guatemala’s National Plan of Action for Sharks, Rays and Chimaeras, while strengthening community-based monitoring and conservation efforts led in collaboration with artisanal fishers.

Special thanks to the fishing communities, citizen scientists, collaborators, and funding partners who made this research possible. This research would not have been possible without the generous support of our donors throughout the years.

We thank The Rufford Foundation , and Luis von Ahn Foundation for their valuable support of this initiative, for helping make long-term shark research and conservation efforts in Guatemala possible.

Our team conducted market survey interviews in Guatemala City and Sipacate, Escuintla to gather information on the commercialization of fishery products, including the types of products sold, their prices, and distribution destinations.
During these visits, vendors from the fisheries sector were interviewed, and key information on the supply available at each point of sale was recorded. This work contributes to strengthening the understanding of fishery product supply chains and commercialization dynamics in Guatemala.

We thank Our Seas Foundation n for their valuable support of this initiative.
