Unmarked Streets

Many of the large companies in Guatemala City refuse to hire women, because women get pregnant, must take care of their children, and are too much trouble. Women in Guatemala City are forced into the informal economy, where the pay is low, unreliable, and the work is often dangerous. Many women feel trapped, because they did not finish school, and lack the skills and confidence to start or run a small business. We offer a space for women in Guatemala to work in a supportive community, where they receive business training while they earn money making jewelry out of recycled materials. We use the jewelry program as a platform to teach our participants about business concepts like sales, effective communication, quality control and more. With the skills they learn at Unmarked Streets, the women in our program have the foundation they need to start a business of their own, or seek employment with more confidence.
