How will true devotion and true comprehension of the nature of the Divine manifest in an individual? Bhagawan clearly states today.

There are two truths that must be accepted by every pilgrim or devotee: (1) Devotion has to be full, free, and comprehensive. (2) Divinity must be conceived as full, free, and comprehensive. On the other hand, devotion today is almost always only ‘part-time’. That is to say, whenever disease, defeat, or disappointment happen to assail you, you turn to God and pray for His Grace; but when you are happy, prosperous, healthy, and in good shape, you ignore God and claim that they are all due to your own abilities and achievements. God is ignored in sunshine; He is wanted only when there is night. Devotion must persist and flourish, unaffected by time, place or circumstance. God too has to be experienced in His fullness, and the Ananda of that experience should be made one’s permanent possession. It is impossible to experience God and also talk about Him. Words like Sarvajna (all-knowing) and Sarvavyapi (all-pervasive) are used by people since elders and saints have used them from ancient times; it is impossible for anyone to have the fullest and the most comprehensive experience of these qualities of the Divine, and also speak about that experience.

¿Cómo se manifiestan en un individuo la verdadera devoción y la verdadera comprensión de la naturaleza de lo Divino? Bhagavan lo declara hoy de manera cristalina.

Hay dos verdades que todo peregrino o devoto debe aceptar: (1) La devoción debe ser plena, libre e integral. (2) La Divinidad debe concebirse como plena, libre e integral. Por otro lado, la devoción hoy en día casi siempre es “a jornada parcial”. Es decir, cuando la enfermedad, la derrota o la decepción les azotan, acuden a Dios y oran por su gracia; pero cuando son felices, prósperos, están sanos y en buena forma, ignoran a Dios y afirman que todo esto se debe a vuestras propias habilidades y logros. A Dios se le ignora en los días soleados; solo se le busca cuando cae la noche. La devoción debe ser persistente y florecer, sin verse afectada por el tiempo, el lugar o las circunstancias. A Dios también hay que experimentarlo en su plenitud, y el Ananda [la Bienaventuranza, la dicha suprema] de esa experiencia debe convertirse en una posesión permanente de la persona. Es imposible experimentar a Dios y hablar sobre Él al mismo tiempo. La gente usa palabras como Sarvajna (omnisciente) y Sarvavyapi (omnipresente) porque las personas mayores y los santos las han empleado desde tiempos antiguos. Es imposible que alguien experimente estas cualidades del Ser Divino de la manera más plena y completa y, al mismo tiempo, hable sobre esa experiencia.

What is the nature of true devotion and complete surrender to God? Bhagawan explains today, narrating an episode from the Ramayana.

When Rama, Sita and Lakshmana went to the forest and reached Chitrakuta mountain, Rama told Lakshmana to put up a hut in a place of his choice. Hearing these words, Lakshmana felt hurt and bent down his head with grief. Noting this, Sita asked Lakshmana, “Why are you perturbed, Lakshmana? Your brother did not say anything harsh. Why do you feel so sad?” Lakshmana said, “O, Mother! Have I ever had any choice of my own? The likes of Rama are mine. I have surrendered myself to Rama. The command of Rama is what I want to carry out. While it is so, how can I withstand the impact of Rama asking me to put up the hut at a place of my choice? Does it not amount to separation from Rama?” That is the intensity of the feelings of a true devotee towards the Lord. Your thoughts should always be centred on God. The world is like a passing cloud. But the relationship between you and God is permanent and eternal.

¿Cuál es la naturaleza de la verdadera devoción y de la entrega total a Dios? Bhagavan lo explica hoy, narrando un episodio del Ramayana.

Cuando Rama, Sita y Lakshmana fueron al bosque y llegaron a la montaña Chitrakuta, Rama le dijo a Lakshmana que construyera una cabaña en un lugar que este último escogiera. Al oír estas palabras, Lakshmana se sintió herido y bajó la cabeza con dolor. Al notarlo, Sita le preguntó: “¿Qué te ha perturbado, Lakshmana? Tu hermano no dijo nada con dureza. ¿Por qué estás tan triste?” Lakshmana respondió: “¡Oh, Madre! ¿Acaso he tenido alguna vez elección propia? Considero los gustos de Rama como míos. Me he entregado a Rama. Lo que quiero hacer es cumplir la orden de Rama. Como eso es así, ¿cómo puedo soportar el impacto de que Rama me pida que construya la cabaña en un lugar que escoja yo? ¿Acaso no viene a ser separarme de Rama?” Esa es la intensidad de los sentimientos de un verdadero devoto hacia el Señor. Tus pensamientos siempre deben estar centrados en Dios. El mundo es como una nube pasajera. Pero la relación entre tú y Dios es permanente y eterna.

Isn’t God a resident of every heart, immaterial of one’s faith in His existence there? What is the value of faith and love in God then? Bhagawan explains by quoting the example of a great devotee.

The Lord resides not only in the hearts of devotees, but also in the hearts of the evil-minded. Once, child Prahlada approached his mother Leelavati, and told her, “Mother, there is only one difference between me, who is a devotee of Hari and my father, who hates Hari. Ever contemplating the nectarous sweetness of the Lord, repeating His name and constantly remembering Him, I am immersed in the bliss of love of the Lord like one intoxicated. My father, in his hatred of Narayana, has turned his heart into stone and installed Him in it.” The Lord, who dwelt in the heart of Prahlada, who loved Narayana, and the Lord who was in the heart of Hiranyakashipu, who hated Narayana, was one and the same. Drinking deep the nectar of Divine Love, Prahlada quenched his heart's thirst and found bliss. Installing the Lord in his stony heart, Hiranyakashipu was unable to allay his burning thirst and experienced endless worries! It is said, man must live in faith. The one who lives in faith experiences happiness. And the man who experiences this happiness will be far from restlessness and live in peace.
