Global Shore Opportunities

Global Shore Opportunities Global Shore's exists to transform Guatemala through Christ-centred education. We strive to raise up disciples of Christ through education.

Global Shore Opportunities is a NGO established in 2004, with offices in Canada and the US. Global Shore’s mission is to transform Guatemala through Christ-centred education. GSO began sending Canadian university students to the small town of El Tizate for two-month volunteer trip in the summers. Over the years we saw great need for quality houses and began a construction program. As infrastructur

e and housing has improved throughout the town, we’ve focused our efforts on providing education, which is still a significant need in the community. In 2018 we finished construction of our K-12 school, Colegio Cristiano Avivando el Fuego (CCAF). With an incredible group of Guatemalan teachers, a robust English department staffed by North American teachers and competitive test scores, we are seeing tremendous impact on the lives of the 300+ students, the majority of which come from low-income families. GSO runs a four-month summer discipleship program and regularly hosts short-term teams throughout the year. Our school is funded through international donors who sponsor student education, or partner with our Guatemalan staff members. Often our friends and family join our English department, providing needed English education which sets our students up for success when they get to the job market.

Alumni Spotlight: Kory Sagastume

Kory graduated from our Graphic Design program in 2024. After volunteering to translate for one of our short-term teams during a tour of Antigua, she was inspired to become a translator and now works for an NGO called Filter of Hope!

"We supply filters and water purification to communities in need. We also bring the word of God when we visit their homes."

Kory is a "full CCAF" graduate, having attended our school from Junior Kindergarten through graduation and receiving English classes throughout those years. "I never took English classes outside [of CCAF] until last year," she said. "Almost everything I know I learned at CCAF." Now, Kory translates from Spanish to English and vice versa when visiting communities with Filter of Hope. Go, Kory!

Christ, the Son of Man, is the ladder that reaches from earth to heaven, on which the angels ascend and descend, and which unites our temporal, material existence to the transcendent reality of God's kingdom. Through Him, heaven has been opened, and human nature restored to its divine purpose as the image of God, transfigured and exalted to be seated at the right hand of the Father.

Home visits are a key aspect of short-term trips. Each team donates to purchase several baskets of non-perishable supplies for the families of students at our school, and team members visit these homes with a member of our administrative staff. These visits provide an opportunity for our school directors to connect with parents (who may be a family new to our school or going through a difficult time) and for team members to gain firsthand experience of everyday Guatemalan life, allowing them to see what the average Guatemalan home looks like.

William, a team member on this recent trip, spoke about their visit to the Upum family, who have two daughters at our school.

Last week, we had the privilege of hosting a team from the University of British Columbia and UCM (University Christian Ministries). They were a joy to have, and came with open hearts and a willingness to engage. The team helped out in English classes, installed some much-needed shelving in one of our storage closets, and went on home visits to deliver supplies to students' families. Working with university-aged young people is such a pleasure, and we hope to host more teams like them in the future!

Francisco started working with us this year as a member of our maintenance staff at the Pastores campus. He has been a great addition to our team—always bringing positive energy and a standard of excellence to his duties. Francisco's son, Pablo, is also in grade 5 at our Pastores school.

"I love working at CCAF because of the environment that is created—the presence of God is here. I also love the kids; working in a setting with children is something I've really enjoyed."

Thank you, Francisco, for your great attitude and hard work!

Christ not only "descended" to us in the incarnation, and again into the lower parts of the earth, but he has now "ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things" with himself. In this way, though we do not see Him in the body, He is not absent from us, but is ever-present Spiritually (that is, by the Holy Spirit) with us and in all places. And we also are seated with Him in heavenly places.

Our Mother’s Day meeting was such a precious time: each attendee received a craft made by her child, and we had a time of worship followed by a word of encouragement from our own Pastora Julianna. We ended the evening with a traditional Guatemalan refreshment—tamales and warm fruit cider!

Magda Alvarez is one of our moms, with a daughter in grade 7 and three others who have graduated from our high school! She shared what the school has meant to her family and why it has played such a key role in her children’s lives.
