This painting is dedicated to Simos.
One spectacular summer day, we hired a boat from Out of the Blue and Simos was our captain. He took a small group of us boating to view the local caves. I showed him a photo of a particular formation I had shot a few years back and of course, he knew exactly where it was located, Omprogialos Bay. Simos was very excited and encouraged me to swim through this passageway by loaning me his waterproof high-resolution camera. I swam through the cave filming multiple times! It was thrilling, mind blowing, ecstatic . The result has been a series of watercolors and oil paintings of the reflections on the water and light pouring through the archway…
Caves have been significant spiritual sites for many cultures. The Minoans held sacred ceremonies within them all over Crete. The ancient Greeks believe Zeus was born in a cave on Crete. John received his revelation in a cave on Patmos, and so on.
One of my professors told me that the purpose of art is to lead the viewer along the path of revelation. I have attempted to create a portal of swimming to the light. Perhaps I am the one who is being lead.
