Carlos is not a medium for entertainment. He is a soul that has carried a lot in his years….
Carlos, an old white big horse, has spent almost his entire life carrying people on his back prior to coming to our sanctuary. For years he had offered his strength, his patience, his body….carrying people on his back at a tourist destination.
The first day he came to us wrapped in a blanket, he was skinny, exhausted, and so overwhelmed it broke our hearts.
His gaze was blank, tired... as if he had given up on life.
That day, the truth is, we were scared.
We believed they brought him to us so he would not die in their hands... for us to take his last goodbye.
But we did not lose faith that he could live and thrive with the proper care for even a moment.
With care, proper nutrition, calm and a lot of love, Carlos began to change slowly. Each day he would make a small healing change that showed us he was still fighting…
Every week he got a little stronger.
And along with his body, his soul also began to heal.
Months later, the man who had brought him to us appeared.
He said he missed him, and that he wanted to see him, groom him.
And he brought with him a saddle and reins.
Right in front of our eyes, he began to tighten his saddle onto Carlos’s already tormented, but slowly healing, body.
Carlos was standing still, patiently.
And when she put the reins on him, we saw something that will never fade from our memories….
Foam came out of his mouth.
And a tear welled from his eye.
A teardrop that said everything he could not speak.
After an hour of “fun” and riding with his previous owner, when he left, we looked at Carlos and made him a promise:
Never again.
And we held onto it.
Since that day, Carlos has never carried anyone on his back again.
He lives free, with dignity, as he deserved from the first day of his life.
Today he runs carefree with Antigone, his best friend here at the shelter.
Two broken souls that found companionship, freedom and peace in each other.
Carlos taught us something very important:
Animals don't forget about pain, they feel it intensely. And, love is stronger.
If you think every creature deserves a second chance, share Karlos' story.
Let's all remember that true love doesn't ride...it liberates.
