Today, hikers found these puppies in a trash bag while hiking 😩

Thankfully, they found us and brought them to us, but one of the puppies had passed away…two are with us and are fighters 🙏

This is common practice in Greece, to throw puppies in the trash…it is something that traumatizes us deeply, and we will never stop educating the public about day and neuter services and advocating for change!

So incredibly thankful to the hikers for caring and bringing them to us ♥️

Carlos is not a medium for entertainment. He is a soul that has carried a lot in his years….

Carlos, an old white big horse, has spent almost his entire life carrying people on his back prior to coming to our sanctuary. For years he had offered his strength, his patience, his body….carrying people on his back at a tourist destination.

The first day he came to us wrapped in a blanket, he was skinny, exhausted, and so overwhelmed it broke our hearts.
His gaze was blank, tired... as if he had given up on life.

That day, the truth is, we were scared.
We believed they brought him to us so he would not die in their hands... for us to take his last goodbye.

But we did not lose faith that he could live and thrive with the proper care for even a moment.

With care, proper nutrition, calm and a lot of love, Carlos began to change slowly. Each day he would make a small healing change that showed us he was still fighting…

Every week he got a little stronger.
And along with his body, his soul also began to heal.

Months later, the man who had brought him to us appeared.
He said he missed him, and that he wanted to see him, groom him.

And he brought with him a saddle and reins.

Right in front of our eyes, he began to tighten his saddle onto Carlos’s already tormented, but slowly healing, body.
Carlos was standing still, patiently.

And when she put the reins on him, we saw something that will never fade from our memories….

Foam came out of his mouth.
And a tear welled from his eye.

A teardrop that said everything he could not speak.

After an hour of “fun” and riding with his previous owner, when he left, we looked at Carlos and made him a promise:

Never again.

And we held onto it.

Since that day, Carlos has never carried anyone on his back again.
He lives free, with dignity, as he deserved from the first day of his life.

Today he runs carefree with Antigone, his best friend here at the shelter.
Two broken souls that found companionship, freedom and peace in each other.

Carlos taught us something very important:

Animals don't forget about pain, they feel it intensely. And, love is stronger.

If you think every creature deserves a second chance, share Karlos' story.
Let's all remember that true love doesn't ride...it liberates.

One of our most beautiful and healing rescue stories! Meet Antigone ❤️

We would love to see something similar developed in our area, too! So thankful for this chef who through his kindness has taught a community to be kind to strays ♥️

In a small coastal town in Greece, a local chef uses his kitchen to support the area's stray animals.

Every evening after closing his restaurant, he takes fresh, leftover ingredients and cooks proper meals consisting of rice, vegetables, and meat specifically for the town's stray dogs.

Once night falls, the chef walks through the harbor and local streets to distribute the food to the dogs, who have learned to recognize him and eagerly wait for his arrival.

His nightly routine has inspired local residents to participate as well by leaving out food and fresh water for the animals.

While the chef's efforts cannot completely solve the stray animal crisis on the island, his daily initiative ensures that fewer dogs in his community go to sleep hungry.

This kind act shows how one person can make a difference in the lives of helpless creatures.

By dedicating his time and resources, the chef has created a more compassionate community that looks out for its vulnerable animals, proving that small gestures of kindness can spread warmth throughout an entire town.

Our dogs alerted us to this beautiful snake today! We were able to relocate him safely to an area a bit away from the animal areas of the shelter where he can safely live and thrive ♥️

Please be kind and respect all living beings! Snakes are a vital part of our ecosystem and deserve loving compassion, kindness, and respect…please message us with questions and for help with learning to peacefully and respectfully coexist with our wildlife!

Thank you so much to all our supporters, we couldn’t do it without you! Please like, share, and comment to help us raise awareness!

The Municipality of northern Kynouria, in cooperation with a contracted private veterinary clinic, is responsible for neutering, hospitals and general veterinary care of stray animals, services paid for normally by the citizens and the state, and not provided free of charge...

Unfortunately, for a long time we've been dealing with repeated incidents of poor care and serious postoperative complications. In many cases, a few days after neutering, and even after several weeks, the post operative stitches opened, causing the animals to be left helpless on the street and some losing their lives, since as strays there was no possibility of continuous supervision, and they are released back to the streets after spaying/neutering.

Some animals end up being rescued because they are randomly spotted by pedestrians who informed the police and then us. These lucky ones are saved literally at the last moment, because now, after previous similar incidents, we have become very suspicious that the county of Kynouria is releasing them too soon without the appropriate post operative care and monitoring.

Although we have repeatedly informed both the Municipality and the contracted veterinary office about the situation, instead of monitoring and taking measures, the county’s reaction was to exclude us from information that can help us to track the animals and their care, and to prohibit us from discussing these animals’ care with the contracted veterinarian, so that we could not detect new cases of mismanagement! This is illegal and abusive! So many lives could have been saved!

To date, almost 10 incidents have come to our attention. We wonder and worry every day about how many more animals died helplessly, hiding in fields or abandoned buildings, that were subjected to these practices that we did not know about and could not track.

Also, many of these strays presented other related/unrekated postoperative complications, such as tumors and postoperative complications in the abdominal/pelvic/reproductive areas of their bodies, complications that could have been prevented/dealt with if the animals would have had the appropriate post operative care and monitoring, instead of being dumped back on the streets soon after their surgeries 😩😩

In addition, we found that in many cases required treatment for fleas and ticks was not done, resulting in the animals being full of parasites just a few days after sterilization.

We have serious questions and concerns about the quality of care that county and city officials are giving to these animals! When basic care protocols are not observed, we ask ourselves whether required vaccines are actually being given? Were internal deworming pills administered? Were the mandatory by law chips implanted?

Strays are lives deserving of care, respect and dignity, and this is unacceptable!
