American Farm School

American Farm School The American Farm School - a center of teaching and research excellence in sustainable agriculture and other life sciences. Aliki Perroti.

After 30 years of service in the Balkans, enlightened American educator Dr. John Henry House with his wife, Susan Adeline, founded the American Farm School in 1904 on the outskirts of Thessaloniki. The first students were boys orphaned in one of the many uprisings marking the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in Europe. Dr. House was known as a practical idealist, dedicated to “educating the whole in

dividual: the head, the hands, the heart.” Hands-on training in field and garden crops, vineyards and orchards, livestock and silkworm production, and in industrial skills such as carpentry, masonry and blacksmithing, equipped American Farm School graduates to succeed in farming and, over time, aid in the economic development of Greece. Modest donations of funds and equipment from a loyal circle of supporters in the United States helped the institution to survive through its early years, as it bore witness to two Balkan Wars, World War I and the massive resettlement in Greece of refugees from Asia Minor. The 1930s, a period of expanding academic facilities and bringing the latest agricultural innovations to Greece, gave way to World War II and Occupation; to the ensuing civil war; and to postwar efforts to reconstruct Greek agriculture and agricultural education. During the second half of the 20th century the School was led by Bruce M. Lansdale, an American teacher, engineer and philhellene who shared with his wife, Tad, a remarkable ability to communicate with and inspire people in all walks of life. Milestones of the time included coeducation; short courses and technical advice for farmers in the region, incorporation of information technology across the campus and educational farm, and “training of trainers” programs for international groups. Faced with growing demand for higher education, the American Farm School established the Perrotis College of Agriculture, Environment and Life Sciences in 1996, through a gift from Mrs. The English language curriculum serves an international student body with innovative specializations leading to a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree that is recognized worldwide. The American Farm School today is taking agriculture and life sciences education into the 21st century, while remaining true to its roots and century-long tradition of hands-on learning.

“A Jewel for the Country” and a True “Beacon of Knowledge for Macedonia and the Entire Nation”: Minister of Rural Development and Food Margaritis Schinas Visits the American Farm School

The American Farm School was described as “a jewel for the country” and a true “beacon of knowledge for Macedonia and the entire nation” by Minister of Rural Development and Food Margaritis Schinas during his official visit to the institution’s educational facilities and model educational farm.
Minister Schinas arrived at the School’s campus at 11:30 a.m., where he was warmly welcomed at the main gate by the President of the Institution, Dr. Jeff Lansdale, Vice President for Resource Development Athena Peristeropoulou, and Chief Operating Officer Manos Agrodimos. Immediately afterwards, an extensive tour began, during which the Minister witnessed firsthand the School’s pioneering work, the integration of theory and practice, and its innovative approaches to primary production.

In particular, he visited the educational vineyard and then the smart greenhouses, which operate in collaboration with Cisco, where he was briefed on their digital innovations and spoke with students. The tour continued at the School’s dairy facility, as well as the “Pavlos Kontellis Model Agricultural Machinery Technician Training Laboratory,” where he met students of the specialty “Agricultural Machinery Maintenance and Repair Technician” at the Private School of Advanced Vocational Training, who are trained in real-life conditions using modern equipment.

In his remarks, Minister Schinas stated:
“The American Farm School is a jewel for the country, an example of how the primary sector can add value, produce high-quality products, and open pathways to international markets, but most importantly, how it can educate young Greeks in a way that keeps them close to production.
At a time when Greek agriculture is often subject to criticism and negativity, keeping young people connected to the field, livestock, and rural communities is a major national challenge. The American Farm School has been achieving this for more than a century.
My visit is a substantive one, and I want to assure the educational community that the Greek state will stand by them, as we need them as a beacon of knowledge and as a model and catalyst for similar initiatives across Greece.
I would like to congratulate the President, the entire educational community, and the donors for their outstanding work.
As discussions intensify in Europe regarding the Common Agricultural Policy for 2028–2034, addressing the ageing agricultural population is a top priority. We want young farmers to have incentives and restart packages, and the American Farm School provides them with the skills that make the transition into production smoother.
We must connect specialized knowledge with the real economy, as I do not wish to lead a ministry of payments, but a ministry that generates added value and prosperity.”

On behalf of the American Farm School, President Dr. Jeff Lansdale stated:
“It is a distinct honor to welcome Minister Schinas to our institution. His visit reaffirms our long-standing and close collaboration with the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and highlights our shared commitment to strengthening the agri-food sector through education and innovation.
Our research demonstrates that production is being radically transformed through the use of modern digital applications, such as the Cisco systems installed in our greenhouses. Everything we do today continues the mission entrusted to us by our founder in 1904, who spoke of cultivating the stewards of the land.
We had the opportunity to present to the Minister our vision for the future of agriculture, the investments we are making in new technologies, and the way we prepare the next generation of scientists and producers to respond to the challenges of climate change and sustainable development.”

The School’s Trustee and representative of Iowa State University, Dr. David Acker, referred to the application for the establishment and operation of a non-state university in Greece submitted by Iowa State University. He emphasized that, pending approval by the Greek State, a new non-state university will be created in collaboration with the American Farm School.
“We already have 30 years of productive collaboration with the School and look forward to continuing this shared journey for many years to come,” he noted.

Finally, School Trustee Thymis Efthymiadis added:
“The Institution carries out highly important work both for Thessaloniki, by opening its doors to children from urban areas so they can experience agricultural life, and for young people from rural regions seeking to develop new skills.
Our goal is to support Greek agriculture in its transition toward sustainability and the production of high-quality products demanded by consumers.
As Trustees, we continuously support the School’s initiatives through donations, new ideas, and actions, ensuring the continuity of this remarkable work.”

An application for a license to establish and operate a University Legal Entity in Greece with Iowa State University (ISU) as the parent institution has been submitted in accordance with Law 5094/2024. ISU is widely recognized as one of the leading universities in agriculture, technology, and applied research in the United States and globally.

Pending approval from the Greek State, a new non-state university will be created in partnership with the American Farm School; a development that marks a historic moment for both Institutions and for higher education in Greece.

For more than a century, the American Farm School has played a vital role in advancing the country’s agro-food sector. Since its founding in 1904, the School has educated generations of professionals, supported agricultural production, introduced innovative practices, and contributed meaningfully to regional economic growth. The establishment of the new University represents both a natural next step and a significant advancement for Greece’s higher education landscape, bringing a leading American university into the center of the country’s academia.

Subject to final approval, the new institution will be named the AFS University of Science and Technology and will operate under the commercial name AFSU. It will be based on the School’s campus in Thessaloniki, making full use of its modern facilities, laboratories, educational farm, and extensive international partnerships.

AFSU will consist of three Schools:
School of Agriculture & Natural Resources, offering a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Plant Production. School of Sciences, offering four-year Bachelor’s degrees in Food Science and Biochemistry. School of Business Administration and Economics, offering a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business.
All programs will be taught exclusively in English, strengthening the University’s international outreach and attracting students from Greece and abroad.

Once licensed, undergraduate programs will begin in the 2026-2027 academic year, with applications for graduate programs to follow at a later stage.
“Since its founding in 1858, Iowa State University has focused on excellence in education and research. AFSU will have a bright future as a leader in agriculture, food, business, and the sciences” said Prof. Daniel Robison, Dean, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Iowa State University.

“Our partnership with Iowa State University and the launch of AFSU represent a historic milestone for Greece, as a leading American university takes part in the country’s new non-state university framework. After 122 years of service, we are taking a bold step forward: establishing a University that imparts scientific knowledge, technology, and hands-on education. Our goal is to prepare professionals who will lead the agro-food sector into an era of sustainability, innovation, and global engagement,” said Dr. Jeff Lansdale, President of the American Farm School.
