We are delighted to announce the 6th Acousmatic Music International Composition Competition “Iannis Xenakis”. This new edition follows the successful organisation of the previous competition, which concluded last November with public performances of the winning works, alongside compositions by the jury members and Iannis Xenakis, presented in two very special, fully attended concerts at the Noesis Science Museum of Thessaloniki.

For the 6th edition of the competition, we are honoured to welcome an outstanding jury, chaired this time by Daniel Teruggi.

We look forward to receiving your works and to once again organising this worldwide celebration of electroacoustic music.

Deadline is the 1st of January 2027

Director of the Competition

Lecture/Workshop at the School of Sonic Arts, Tehran in collaboration with the Contemporary Music Lab.
Dimitri Papageorgiou, Algorithmic composition and the fragility of sonic identity

This presentation explores the intersection of memory, repetition, and algorithmic processes in my compositional practice. Drawing from cognitive psychology (e.g., Schacter’s theories of memory distortion) and fractal mathematics (e.g., Mandelbrot’s scaling), we will dissect how interlocking techniques—recombining germinal pitch cells—and scaling strategies—self-similar rhythmic hierarchies—mimic the reconstructive nature of human recollection. Through analysis of works like In the Vestige of the Present (2008), we will examine how algorithms transform fragmented materials into evolving sonic architectures, balancing invariance and corruption. The talk situates my methods within a lineage of 20th-century avant-garde practices while proposing new frameworks for understanding memory as a compositional tool in the digital age. The presentation is concluded with a workshop, From Code to Score: Algorithmic Interlocking in SuperCollider and Dorico. This hands-on workshop guides participants through the practical implementation of reconstructive techniques using SuperCollider and Dorico.
