Liveloula

Liveloula Liveloula is Holistic Natural Living with a focus on Non Violence, Ecology and Self Sustainability For now, we are cultivating parts of a 1 hectare plot.

OUR STORY

THE EGG

Liveloula was born out of two people's dream to step out of the stressful western city life and root back into nature, in simplicity living a new life with a much reduced impact on their environment, in tune with nature and its rhythm. For almost 8 years now Chenny and Steven have been steadily realising that dream, turning an abandoned field, where the soils had been almost co

mpletely destroyed by overgrazing, into a wonderful labyrinth of permaculture gardens and a food forest. With the help of a constant stream of volunteers, friends and family, a homestead was built, a haven for both wild and domesticated animals, soils have been restored, spaces to relax and discover nature have been installed and an abundance of delicious, healthy food grown. We see this first stage in the project as our Liveloula's larval state, were we have taken our time to learn and grow strong. We have gone through this period constantly researching, building new experiences, receiving feedback from both people and the rest of our surrounding nature, making mistakes, correcting them. Liveloula has spent 2020, like most people worldwide, cocooning, in deep reflection of itself, preparing for the next chapter in its life, building wings. Spreading our wings
The first chapter of the dream realised, and inspired by visitors and neighbouring projects, Liveloula, at the start of 2021 is ready to break out of its cocoon, dry its brand new wings in the winds of (global) change, carefully preparing for its first flight. We are located in the northern Peloponnese just outside the village Seliana. The valley where Liveloula is situated is rich in water, diverse in vegetation, it’s so beautiful. Two sides of this plot are bordered by forest and the other sides are (abandoned) orchards. For the community to further develop, Liveloula aims to grow in space to. This we’d like to achieve by means of purchasing land partly to allow the return of wilderness, partly to restore old orchards, stimulating the biologic fruit production in this valley. Liveloula is off grid. Power is generated with photovoltaics and there are plans to build a hydro-electric system powered by a river nearby. Our drinking water comes from a spring and irrigation water is tapped from a stream higher up in the forest. Last year the first natural building was finished and this year we’ll start building the second one. ALL of the vegetables we ate last year were organic and home grown. Liveloula aims to become a non-profit organisation to support it’s activities. Profits will be spent to support growth, local initiatives focusing on the preservation of nature, the production of low impact, quality foods and the information and sensibilisation of both the local community and visitors on the subject of low impact living, self sustainability, community networking and general health. To achieve this income , Liveloula aims primarily at becoming the main vegetable supplier for our friends and neighbors at Re-Green. Re-green hosts beautiful seminars and workshops for groups sometimes over 30 people. Our dream is to provide quality organically grown food for groups this big and for ourselves. Our all natural way of farming shuns mechanical devices, therefore farming becomes a fun and dynamic hands on experience for big groups of people. Did we mention working the soil is healthy for body and mind? Second, Liveloula will be offering a broad set of quality products ranging from home pharmacy to jewelry to homegrown organic foods. So far, Liveloula has been privately funded, yet to make a good start, we are hoping for your support. Small and bigger donations can be made to help us further install a good infrastructure. With a better infrastructure we hope to be able to host more volunteers for a longer period of time or attract new residents, allowing Liveloula to make a bigger impact.

Ever wondered how we chose the beautiful name Liveloula? 🌿

(Greek version in the comments ⬇️)

When we first arrived, there were none — no Liveloula to be found. The land was quiet, still finding its balance. Over time, as the soil healed and the ecosystem began to breathe again, the Liveloula returned.
The word Liveloula has deep roots — inspired by one of the oldest insects known to Earth. They predate the dinosaurs, masters of flight with wings patterned in incredible fractals — nature’s geometry in motion 🦋.
Their life cycle mirrors our own journey: larval stages, growth, transformation, and emergence. We started this project not really knowing what it would become — only that we wanted to live simply, grow our own food, and reconnect with the land.
Through years of change, the farm has transitioned again and again — evolving into something larger than we imagined: a living, balanced system that honors every stage of growth.
Where pesticides are sprayed, there are no Liveloula. To us, they’ve become a powerful symbol — of regeneration, harmony, and the beauty that appears when we choose to live in rhythm with nature.
Liveloula is more than a name. It’s a reflection of what we strive for every day — life, balance, and connection with the natural world 🌿

Nestled between Mount Chelmos and Mount Kyllini in the northern Peloponnese, the landscape around Seliana is a place of striking beauty — rolling fields, orchards, and rugged mountain slopes. Yet beneath its charm lies a story of exhaustion. Surrounding the area, traditional apple and pear orchards still rely on frequent pesticide spraying, and open, repeatedly ploughed soils accelerate erosion and strip away fertility.

Looking up at the hillsides, you can see the lines where overgrazing has left deep marks on the earth — scars that tell of decades of degradation and imbalance. 🐐

Topsoil has washed away, and each hot summer pushes the ecosystem further to its limits.

This is why regeneration matters here. Liveloula’s work within the valley is part of a much larger effort — to care for the soil, protect the water, and restore balance to the land. Through patient hands-on work, community involvement, and ecological design, the project aims to help the valley remember its strength — to slowly heal, one root, one drop, and one season at a time. 🌿

🌱🎉 We have incredible news — Liveloula is now an officially registered NGO in Greece!
This milestone gives us deeper roots and wider branches — a stronger platform to create projects, welcome your support with transparency, and expand our impact on the land.

Here’s where we dream of dedicating our time and energy next:

1. Restore a wetland that was turned into a field — an important habitat for fire salamanders and diverse nesting birds. Bringing it back to life means bringing back biodiversity.

2. Install a natural pond — a vital water catchment and holding system. These climate-balancing, life-giving basins become the heart of thriving plant and animal communities.

3. Revive and diversify an abandoned orchard — improving the soil, reshaping the landscape for better water flow, removing sickly trees, and planting a rich variety of food-producing species to turn it into a lush, resilient food forest.

4. Grow our team of facilitators, trainers, and gardeners so we can host more Erasmus projects and reach more young people, introducing them to nature-based, holistic ways of living. Environmental education remains our main reason for being.

5. Steward more degraded land back into health — transforming poisoned fields into organic havens for wildlife and reviving the entire bioregion. Our vision is to create safe spaces where wildlife can thrive — every orchard we turn organic becomes a sanctuary and a resting place for countless creatures.
Many local farmers feel economically pressured to keep using chemicals that harm the land. We want to offer them hopeful alternatives: to lease or buy land and seed it with locally trained youth who can steward these orchards back into health. Together, we can turn struggling fields into living classrooms, food forests, and thriving habitats for all creatures.

💚 How You Can Help
We’ve already felt so much love and emotional support from you all — now we’re asking for physical contributions to make these dreams a reality.
