Μάθε. Πρόλαβε. Σώσε.

DIVE SAFELY

Every summer, thousands of people lose their lives from drowning (~310.000). Most of these drownings are preventable.
For the World Drowning Prevention Day, we invite you to an open information and education event for children and adults, organized by the Samaritans, Rescuers and Lifeguards of the Red Cross of Rethymno and Save Our Planet International, on Sunday, July 26, 2026 at 10:00-13:00 at Rethymno Beach (in front of the Λύκειο Ελληνίδων).

We will have:
- First aid & CPR
- Drowning prevention instructions
- Safety at sea
- Interactive games for children

Participation is OF COURSE free for everyone. Let's all learn together how we can protect ourselves and the people around us!

Learn. Prevent. Save.

Europe is experiencing one of its most intense June heatwaves on record!

Record-breaking temperatures have swept across the continent:
- France reached 43.8°C, while the country recorded its hottest day ever for June.
- Denmark recorded its warmest day since measurements began in 1874.
- The UK broke its all-time June temperature record (saw this coming since May)
- Spain and Germany also saw historic June highs.

But this isn't just about broken records...

Unfortunately, in France, at least 40 people lost their lives in drowning incidents as many sought relief from the extreme heat temperatures. Across Europe, rail services were disrupted, health warnings were issued and emergency measures were activated. Schools cancelled, roads melting, you can even cook on your roof without an oven! Additionally, in Berlin, 2 water cannons were even deployed to help cool people during the intense temperatures.

Scientists are clear: heatwaves like this have become significantly more likely and more intense because of human-caused climate change.

So... this is the coolest summer of your life, son. It is a reminder that, unless we change course NOW, future summers are expected to become even hotter. With no plan B.

Climate change is not a distant threat. It is happening now, affecting ecosystems, infrastructure, public health, and human lives.
This is now the...
The time to act is NOW!

Small actions inspire bigger change. Share this post, reduce your environmental impact where you can and support policies and initiatives that help build a more resilient future.

📏 630 rulers. 23 volunteers. One goal!

The first part of ReMessured was successfully completed! Through the project’s open workshops, 23 unique volunteers dedicated their time and energy to create a total of 630 rulers, which will be made available to students who need them.

Some came once. Others returned again and again. But all left their own mark on this effort. Special congratulations to those who made their appearance multiple times ( ).

A big thank you to everyone who participated, as well as to our partners at the .ecoproject for the trust, hospitality and provision of the equipment that made this project a reality.

And of course... this is just the beginning!

ReMessured's next steps will follow shortly until the donations reach their final recipients.

Thank you for being a part of this story!

World Refugee Day / June 20

Today, we honor the courage, resilience and hope of millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes because of conflict, persecution, violence and human rights violations.

Behind every number is a person. A family. A dream.

The numbers are speaking for themselves:
- At the end of 2025, there were 117.8 million forcibly displaced people worldwide.
- Among them, 41.6 million were refugees, while millions more remained internally displaced or sought asylum... This means that more than 1 in every 70 people on Earth has been forced to flee their home.
- Around 71% of refugees are hosted by low- and middle-income countries, demonstrating the importance of international solidarity.

(Source: UNCHR, 2025)

World Refugee Day reminds us that becoming a refugee is never a choice. But how we respond is. Everyone deserves safety, dignity, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives. By promoting compassion, inclusion, and peace, we can help create a world where no one is forced to leave home -and where those who do are welcomed with humanity.

✊️ Stand with refugees.
🕊️ Stand for peace.
❤️ Stand for human dignity.

World Blood Donor Day🩸

Today, we honor the MILLIONS of people around the world who choose to give a part of themselves to SAVE OTHERS. That is TRUE LOVE!

Every blood donation can save up to 3 (three) lives, helping patients undergoing surgery, cancer treatment, childbirth complications, trauma care and many many more medical emergencies.

Did you know that.... more than 120 million blood donations are collected globally every year!
The World Health Organization estimates that at least 1-2% of a country's population should donate blood regularly to help meet national needs.

A single donation takes LESS than an hour, but its impact can last a LIFETIME.

This year's World Blood Donor Day theme is:
"One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives."

So.... from Save Our Planet International (SOPI):
-To all blood donors:
THANK YOU for your compassion, solidarity and commitment to helping others!

-To everyone else: If you are eligible, consider becoming a blood donor. Someone, somewhere, may be waiting for the gift only you can give.

A piano in a metro station, how much difference could it make?

Well, for Athens it did a lot! People are uniting to sign, listen, dance and laugh together. Young and old people all alike!

And that's just a small example of how music unites people

Do you agree that MUSIC UNITES PEOPLE?

World Oceans Day!

The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet, produces around half of the oxygen we breathe, regulates our climate, and supports billions of people and species worldwide.

Today, on World Oceans Day, we celebrate the beauty, importance, and resilience of our oceans. But most importantly we recognize the challenges they face.

There is SOME progress....
More than 8% of the world's oceans are now under protection.
Support continues to grow for the global goal of protecting 30% of land and oceans by 2030.
New technologies help monitor illegal fishing and improve marine conservation.

Yet our oceans remain under A LOT OF pressure....
Ocean warming and marine heatwaves are becoming more frequent.
Coral reefs continue to suffer from bleaching and biodiversity loss.
Ocean acidification threatens marine ecosystems.
Plastic and chemical pollution contaminate waters across the globe.
Deep-sea mining proposals raise concerns about ecosystems we still know very little about.
Illegal and unsustainable exploitation of marine resources remains a major challenge.

Scientists warn that despite important conservation efforts, current actions are still NOT ENOUGH to secure the long-term health and resilience of our oceans.

At Save Our Planet International (SOPI), we believe that protecting our oceans starts with everyday actions:
1. Reducing waste (reduce buying, reuse, recycle, compost etc.)
2. Preventing litter from reaching waterways -> Participating in cleanups & Educating ourselves and others

The ocean connects us ALL. Its future... well... OUR FUTURE, depends on the choices we make TODAY.

What is one action you can take this week to help protect our blue planet?
