Alliances 4 Action has joined forces with to boost the coconut and associated

For World Environment Day, we asked our National coordinator in Barbados why prioritizing the environment is important to him, and what action he is taking on it.

Brian-Lee Chandler manages Alliances for Action activities in the scope of the Alliances for Coconuts project in the Caribbean.

Upcycling waste for environmental protection, extra income and job creation is one of the project’s strong features.

In the coconut sector, using every part of the coconut and upcycling the husks into products and fertiliser, for example, are some ways that help manage waste, diversify incomes and contribute to a circular economy.

The Coconuts II project is jointly implemented with and funded by the EU and CARIFORUM.

A Caribbean story of farm to shelf 🌴🥥

Discover a farm to shelf brand that makes all natural, fresh coconut water from coconuts taken straight from its plots in the heart of Guyana’s beautiful Pomeroon region.

1. Cutting the fresh coconuts at the processing facility
2. Mr. Rooster, the man behind the brand!
3. Rooster’s farming resort
4. The final product: Fresh bottled coconut water, grown and made in Guyana!

Rooster’s Products is participating in the regional Agri-Investment Forum & Expo for the next 3 days, with other great Caribbean brands.

Yesterday Alliances for Action and led a team of 10 coconut entrepreneurs from across the Caribbean region to Pomeroon, Guyana.

They paid a visit to successful enterprise Rooster’s Products, who has a 5,000 acre coconut farm and a processing facility for all-natural coconut water.

Participants were inspired by best practices and look forward to implementing them.

Today they all head over to the Agri-Investment Forum & Expo that will unfold over 3 days with the aim of leveraging investment for coconut value-added and sustainable products. This is also part of regional plans to boost local production and reduce reliance on imports.

Ahead of World Coconut Day 🥥 on September 2nd, we will be sharing some stories from our partners in the Caribbean’s coconut sector 🌴

Building a safe inclusive resilient and sustainable coconut community amid covid-19 pandemic and beyond is the theme for 2021, and we want to focus on that.

🇬🇾 In Guyana, coconut farmer Owen de Souza has established a local coconut soap enterprise that mobilizes local youth to produce virgin coconut oil-based soaps in a farm to shelf spirit.

De Souza uses natural coconut oil from his farm in combination with local herbs that are organically produced.

The result of this operation:
🥥 Job creation for youth during a global pandemic
🥥 Extra income for producers thanks to the production of value-added products for the local market

Alliances for Action community impact stories! 📖 🔝

👨🏾‍🌾 Oshane Robinson

‘s engages a method of peer learning, with designated ‘ring’ farmers who receive trainings and pass knowledge on to their respective communities of farmers.

Oshane Robinson is a second ‘ring’ farmer. With support from Jamaica’s and he planted coconuts and intercrops like sweet potato and plantain to generate short and long term income and food sources.

In the short space of 3 months he was soon reaping an abundance of crops for local sales and food for home.

This successful endeavor will now be adopted by other farmers in the community and beyond!
