❤️🐾 TWO YEARS AGO, SOMEONE THREW SNOW OFF A BRIDGE. NOW WE HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS FOR HIM.

Snow was just a puppy when he and his siblings were thrown into a ravine, 4-5 metres below a bridge in Serres, northern Greece. Their cries alerted rescuers, who called in the fire brigade to help bring them to safety.

All the puppies survived, and Snow's brothers and sisters eventually found homes. Snow had an adoption enquiry too, but something was wrong with the way he walked.

X-rays revealed that both his hips were dislocated, believed to be the result of that terrible fall. The damage became more apparent as he grew, and Snow needed two operations. The first, on his left hip, was successfully carried out earlier this year. But the second kept being delayed as one emergency after another stretched his rescuers' already limited funds.

And that's where GAR and our supporters come in. ❤️

We're funding Snow's second and final hip operation, so this lovely boy can finally get the treatment he's been waiting for!

His rescuers told us: "Thank you GAR for funding this last surgery. We really, really want to help him feel better again, but in the last few months something always happens and another emergency takes Snow’s turn."

Snow's story is also a reminder of something important about animal rescue.

The dramatic moment when an animal is saved might capture everyone's attention, but the work doesn't end when the photographs have been shared. Sometimes the consequences of cruelty take years, and considerable expense, to put right.

That's why GAR doesn't just share rescue stories. With your support, we help change how they end. And we're hoping Snow's next chapter will be a very happy one indeed. Good luck, gorgeous boy! ❤️🐾

Imagine being responsible for more than 300 stray cats, spread across 38 feeding colonies over a 30km area.

That’s everyday life for Nikolaos Papadimos in Filiatra, a small town in the south-western Peloponnese. Across Filiatra and the surrounding area, Nikolaos feeds and watches over hundreds of cats living on the streets. At home, he also cares for another 30 cats with special needs.

It’s a huge commitment - in time, food, fuel and money - and one person simply cannot meet every cost alone.

That’s why GAR supporters are helping.

Through our Summer Parasite Prevention Programme, we’ve supplied Nikolaos with parasite treatments for the cats in his care, protecting animals who spend their lives outdoors and are particularly exposed to fleas, ticks and other parasites.

Nikolaos sent us this message: “Your generous donation is far more than a box of treatments. It is relief for many vulnerable cats, protection from suffering, and hope for animals whose lives depend entirely on human compassion.

"Your kindness reminds me that I am not alone in this journey. On behalf of all the cats in my care, thank you for your generosity and support.”

And that last point matters. GAR can provide this help because you support us. Your donations become boxes of parasite treatment reaching cats in Filiatra, food reaching hungry animals elsewhere, veterinary bills being paid and neutering programmes preventing more animals being born into an already difficult life.

🐱 190 DOWN. AND THEY’RE NOT STOPPING. ❤️

Just look at those carriers.
Cat after cat after cat.

This is Marousi in northern Athens, where a major neutering project recently funded by GAR has got off to an extraordinary start.

190 stray cats have already been neutered. And we think that's worth making some noise about. Because behind that number are people doing the hard bit: locating colonies, setting traps, transporting cats, getting them to the veterinary team, collecting them afterwards and returning them safely to the places they know.

Local volunteer Marianna Zervaki told GAR: “Reaching 190 neutered stray cats is truly impressive and brings enormous relief to both the local community and, of course, the animals themselves.

“The collaboration with Dr Trakas, together with the tireless dedication of volunteers, is the key to creating healthier stray cat populations and improving their quality of life.”

But here's the number that puts 190 into perspective.
Marousi is estimated to have more than 15,000 stray cats.
Nobody is pretending 190 solves that problem.

But every large-scale neutering programme has to start somewhere - and this one has started at quite a pace.

GAR's supporters provide the funding. Marianna and the local volunteers bring the knowledge and sheer determination. Dr Trakas and his veterinary team provide the expertise. And Alexis Mantzoros - known locally as the “Trap King” - is among those getting the cats through the door.

That's how 190 happens. Not one organisation swooping in to save the day. People working together, each bringing something the others need.

And this is only the beginning.

🍂🎃 WHO KNEW A PUMPKIN COULD HELP GREEK RESCUE ANIMALS? ❤️🐾

Our supporters find all sorts of wonderfully creative ways to raise money for GAR, and with autumn well and truly here, one of our favourites is back!

Knitted and crocheted pumpkins that raise £3 for Greek Animal Rescue with every pattern sold! 🧶🎃

And there's a lovely story behind them.

Our long-time supporter Jo Jones comes from a family of GAR adopters. Between them, the family have given homes to FOUR Greek rescue dogs, with another happily adopted by friends. So helping Greek rescue animals is something of a family tradition! ❤️

But Jo doesn't just adopt. She's also rather talented with a pair of knitting needles!

Together with crochet tutor Aly Todd, she's helped create TWO gorgeous pumpkin patterns, one knitted and one crocheted, which are available again this autumn through our friends at .

❤️🐾 DORIAN IS STILL WAITING FOR HIS UK HOME

Three years old. Friendly. Relaxed. Good with other dogs. Fine around cats. And just look at him.

Dorian has quite a lot going for him - but what he doesn’t yet have is a family of his own.

We introduced you to Dorian earlier this month after GAR agreed to help our friends at Animaid Rescue in Athens find him a home in the UK.

He was found beside a road in Greece as a tiny puppy and went on to spend the first two years of his life living in kennels. For the past year he’s been in foster care, where there’s been the chance to really get to know him.

And what has emerged is a genuinely lovely dog.

Dorian is relaxed and friendly, gets on well with other dogs and shows no interest in chasing cats. He weighs around 25kg and measures approximately 75cm to the top of his head, so he’s a good-sized boy - and an exceptionally handsome one.

🐾 SIX GIRLS. SIX NEUTERS. ONE VERY GOOD REASON TO HEAD INTO THE WEEKEND SMILING. ❤️

Meet Eleftheria, Arnie, Stevelina, Lily, Ruby and Honey.

Between them, these six girls from Grevena in northern Greece have been abandoned in villages, found injured in a supermarket car park, dumped at a petrol station and rescued from the streets.

But today they all have something rather brilliant in common.

They’ve been neutered. 🎉

All six, funded by GAR supporters and carried out with the fantastic local volunteers of Filozoiki Omada Grevena.

And this is exactly the kind of update we love sharing. Because you cannot home your way out of a stray animal problem. Finding a home can completely change one dog’s life - and we will always celebrate that. But neutering changes what happens next.

It means Eleftheria, Arnie, Stevelina, Lily, Ruby and Honey will never produce another unwanted litter. No pregnancies. No puppies born into an area where volunteers are already trying desperately to help the dogs who are here.

And in Grevena, that really matters.

It’s a huge rural region where volunteers regularly encounter abandoned shepherd and hunting dogs - often large females capable of producing sizeable litters.

So today we're not dwelling on how big the problem is. We're celebrating six times it just got a little smaller. ❤️

Six girls neutered. ✔️
Six breeding cycles stopped. ✔️
A whole lot of puppies who will never need rescuing. ✔️

Huge thanks to the Grevena volunteers doing the hard work on the ground, and to every GAR supporter helping us put the funding behind them. Now THAT feels like a pretty good way to slide into the weekend. 🐾❤️

105 animals. One woman. And a relationship with GAR that goes back years. ❤️

Today our Summer Parasite Programme takes us to Gargalianoi in Messinia, in the south-western Peloponnese. This is an agricultural part of Greece, surrounded by olive groves and not far from the Ionian coast. And it’s here that Vaso has spent years caring for animals that might otherwise have nowhere to go.

Vaso is certainly not new to GAR. We’ve worked with her and supported her for many years, and today she has around 65 dogs and 40 cats in her care, as well as helping strays in the surrounding area.

That is 105 animals needing food, veterinary care and protection every single day - much of that responsibility falling on one pair of shoulders.

This year has been particularly difficult for Vaso personally. A serious cat bite caused nerve damage to her hand and required hospital treatment and surgery. Yet the animals still needed her, and she has continued caring for them throughout her own treatment and recovery.

So when GAR’s Summer Parasite Programme reached Gargalianoi, we were very pleased to make sure Vaso’s animals were included.

We’ve provided parasite treatments to help protect the dogs and cats in her care against fleas, ticks and the potentially serious diseases parasites can transmit.

Vaso wrote to us: “Thank you so much for your donation. Your kindness and support make a real difference in helping us care for stray animals in need. I truly appreciate your compassion and dedication to animal welfare in Greece and for standing by our side. From the bottom of my heart, I send to you, your volunteers and donors, a very grateful thank you.”

And our thanks go straight back to Vaso.

Supporting animal welfare in Greece isn’t always about dramatic rescues. Sometimes it’s about standing alongside people you’ve known for years and making sure they have practical help to keep going.

Gargalianoi is another small dot on the map of Greece where your support is making a very real difference. Thank you. ❤️

If you only read Lucky’s details on paper, you might decide she isn’t the dog for you.

She’s around nine. She has a neurological condition that makes her wobbly. And yes, she can occasionally have a poo accident indoors.

But then watch this Reel. 💛

This is Lucky.

Out in the woods, nose down and investigating everything. Enjoying her walks. Spending time with people. Calm, affectionate and completely at ease with other dogs.

Her wobble is part of her, but it isn’t painful, it isn’t degenerative and it certainly doesn’t stop her enjoying herself.

Lucky was rescued following the devastating wildfires near Athens and is now in foster care near Southend in Essex, where she can be met before anyone makes that very important decision to adopt.

And still, she keeps being overlooked.

We know why. At nine, with a few extra considerations, Lucky is competing for attention with younger dogs whose adoption profiles might look easier.

But we’re not looking for the home that looks best on paper either.

We’re looking for the person who watches Lucky pottering happily through those woods and sees the dog in front of them: gentle, sociable, affectionate and still very much enjoying life.

She doesn’t need hundreds of people to want her. She needs the right one to finally notice her.

🐱❤️ Three days missing. Then Chris came home with a badly broken leg.

Chris is a friendly stray cat living on the streets of Athens, where local volunteers look out for him.
So when he suddenly disappeared, they were worried. Three days later he finally returned - but with a serious injury to his left back leg.

X-rays showed just how bad it was. His femur had fractured into several pieces and Chris needed surgery to put it back together and stabilise the bone while it heals.

Thankfully, the operation went well. ❤️

His local carers have done brilliantly to raise half of his veterinary costs themselves. They asked GAR whether we could help with the rest - and thanks to our supporters, we could.

It’s a simple example of how working together can make the difference for an animal like Chris.
And just look at him after surgery. Cone on, leg bandaged, dinner in front of him - and apparently just getting on with things. 🥹

There could be an even better ending to Chris’s story, too. He’s a lovely, friendly boy and, once he has recovered, his carers hope to find him a permanent home so he won’t have to return to life on the streets.

For now, recovery comes first.
