Understanding the context when working in a humanitarian setting matters.

Navigating new systems, appointments, and uncertainty is already challenging. Experiencing dental pain at the same time can make this process even harder.

That’s why access to dental care in a context like Lesvos’ Mavrovouni camp is so important.

Dental care doesn't end at the dental clinic.

At Mavrovouni camp, our Dental Clinic and Central Pharmacy work together to provide continuous care. After treatment, patients can access prescribed medication through our on-site pharmacy, helping them manage pain, treat infections when clinically indicated, and support their recovery.

Together, these services help ensure that patients receive the care they need from treatment through recovery.

Today, on World Humanitarian Day, we asked members of our field team one question:

What does humanitarian work mean to you?

Every response reflected each person's unique experiences working alongside displaced communities. Yet together, their reflections came back to the same idea: standing with people, treating everyone with dignity, and recognizing our shared humanity.

These reflections remind us that, above all, this work is about people.

Continuity of care matters.

Some dental treatments require more than one appointment, making consistent follow-up essential. Three of our volunteer dentists share why continuity of care is key to completing treatment, managing ongoing oral health conditions, and providing the best possible care.

Improving oral health also means improving oral health literacy.

As part of the patient journey, our team uses educational models and one-on-one conversations to reinforce good oral hygiene practices and support patients in understanding how everyday habits contribute to long-term oral health.

What guides humanitarian action?

Humanitarian action around the world is guided by four core principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, and Independence.

At CMA, these principles shape the way we provide healthcare, make decisions, and engage with the communities we support.

They ensure that care is provided based on need. With respect, dignity, and without discrimination, while upholding the right of every person to access healthcare.

"The most rewarding part was helping patients finally find relief after living with pain for so long. It reminded me that oral health is an essential part of overall health and wellbeing."

A quote from Dr. Rosline, who volunteered with our dental team at our clinic in Mavrovouni camp, Lesvos, last month.
