▪️ Living Cultures | Study Visit Romania ▪️

📅 10–14 July 2026
📍 Alunișu, Țara Călatei, Romania

Living Cultures continues its journey, and this July we gather for the second study visit to learn from the people, places, and traditions that keep local knowledge alive.
🌿 For five days, participants from Romania, Greece, and Spain will come together in the beautiful village of Alunișu, nestled in the heart of Transylvania.
🥖 Discover traditional sourdough bread baking.
🧀 Learn about goat cheese and kefir making.
🌱 Explore local wild fermentation practices.
Through shared experiences, conversations, and learning by doing, we will explore how food, culture, and community are deeply connected.
✨ Before there were manuals, there were villages. Before there were experts, there were neighbours sharing knowledge around the table.

🌍 Living Cultures is funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission and supported by Erasmus+RO, in partnership with 16Trees and Papaya Association.

▪️The Sound of Summer ▪️

🌞 As summer gently settles in Hopeland, it’s time to open our ears and immerse ourselves in the sounds of the buzzing nature all around us.

🦗 The change of the seasons is not only visible through the eyes. Birds are chirping as the breeding and nesting season slowly comes to an end in Peloponnese. T**s, blackbirds and robins fly around, and at night, we can hear scops owls. Many insects, such as cicadas and crickets, are getting louder as the days get warmer.

🌈 This past week, a new sound has emerged: the sound of Modern Odyssey! The echo of conversations in the guest house, music by the kitchen and clinking cups in the dining area will accompany us until the end of this week.

▪️ Living Cultures | Study Visit Spain ▪️

From 27–31 May, we joined fellow participants in the beautiful village of Selaya, nestled in the Valles Pasiegos region of Cantabria, Spain, for the first study visit of the Living Cultures project.

🍎 Through learning by doing, we explored fermentation as a living cultural practice. From discovering the traditions behind the region’s famous cider to taking part in a kombucha workshop at Jándala, every activity connected us more deeply with local knowledge, nature, and community.

🎉 The first days focused on understanding the concept of “living cultures,” sharing personal experiences with fermentation, and learning about the history, production, and varieties of traditional cider through creative group activities.
Participants also visited local farms and food producers in the Valles Pasiegos region, discovering sustainable farming practices and traditional methods of producing dairy products, sobaos, and quesadas. Through these encounters, they learned how local food traditions are closely connected to community life and cultural heritage.

The study visit concluded with a fermentation workshop at Jándala, where participants explored kombucha, lacto-fermented vegetables, and other fermented foods, gaining practical knowledge while reflecting on the role of fermentation in creating healthier and more connected communities.

💚 We return home with new skills, meaningful reflections, and renewed hope in the power of collective learning.

▪️Three Years of Modern Odyssey ▪️

🚐 For the third year in a row, Hopeland is welcoming the Modern Odyssey! Let's have a look back on how their presence in Hopeland has contributed to making a change.

🤝🏻 The Modern Odyssey is a three-year volunteering project that travels around Greek communities and eco-projects to learn about green practices and gain a better understanding of societal challenges.

💦 In 2024, the team had a significant impact on the land by digging swales in the food forest. Swales are a highly effective method of collecting water, limiting erosion and providing passive irrigation to plants and trees, and if you are not familiar with this practice, they are well worth getting to know! In an area like Hopeland, this initiative has played a huge role in creating a greener space. This practical introduction to permaculture principles also gave the volunteers the opportunity to deepen their understanding of sustainability, inspiring them to think creatively and carefully about water management.

🪨 Last year, in 2025, the team focused on the greenhouse. Using lime concrete, they plastered the outside walls of the greenhouse. This technique allows the walls to breathe by safely letting moisture pass through them. The volunteers also created a stone path around the greenhouse, making it more accessible and cosier.

🌱 This year, the plan is to work on the grey water system! The part connected to the kitchen needs improvement. This will allow the water to irrigate the lower garden more efficiently, making water management more sustainable.

🇪🇺 Modern Odyssey is a European Solidarity Corps programme implemented by Roes Cooperativa and supported by the Education & Culture Executive Agency, which is co-funded by the European Union.

Medusa - Youth Exchange
Day 10 - Closing

🌌 As every adventure comes to an end, our days in Hopeland are also coming to a close.

📘 With each story told, each shadow faced, each smile and hug shared, our heroes grew closer, and now it’s time to close this chapter and set intentions for what comes next.

🫂 The last circle was a moment to share sweet words and say the final goodbyes.

⛵ With the myth complete and our Perseus heading back home, they carry with them what this journey gave them and the chance to inspire their communities.

🗺️ The story doesn’t end here. What comes next, we’ll see. Thank you for being with us during these days. See you soon!

Medusa - Youth Exchange
Day 9 - Ruling the Kingdom

🏰 To rule a kingdom… a task few will ever face. After bringing this realm to life, our heroes choose one leader to guide them through the day and help navigate what was to come.

👣 The mentors who had guided them until now mysteriously disappeared, leaving the question of how to rule the kingdom entirely in the heroes' hands, with no clear answers and no one to rely on but each other.

🗡️ It was time to put down their weapons and slowly let go of some of what they carried throughout the journey. The realm began to flourish, and a banquet was prepared, creating space to pause, gather, and be together.

🗺️ Our heroes are ready to celebrate the world they co-created and to take care of it. Most importantly, to enjoy these last days together before they begin to return to where they came from, carrying a piece of this shared kingdom with them.

Medusa - Youth Exchange
Day 8 - Unifying the Kingdom

🌍 Creating a community isn’t easy. Making space for others while still being yourself is neither. How do you make decisions together?

👹 Our heroes stepped into the best parts of themselves and were faced with different monsters, from a starving lion to a Hollow King that could only be defeated together, and even a group of crazy chickens that escaped the coop.

🧙‍♀️ To support them on their journey, they were joined by a range of unexpected characters: a bard who challenged them, Baba Yaga with her curses, a merchant to haggle with, and, if they lost all their lives, Death to bring them back and make them reflect.

🤔To unify the kingdom, our heroes had a series of challenges to complete, and along the way, two wise sages were there to guide them.

🏰 With the kingdom unified and all the heroes finally together, there is one last challenge ahead before the story reaches its end. How will they rule the kingdom they have just created?

Medusa - Youth Exchange
Day 7 - Facing Cetus

🗺️ After the long journey, our heroes return home with stories to tell and their shadows a bit more uncovered.

👹 Upon their arrival, 7 sea creatures appear at Hopeland, disturbing the peace and challenging our heroes to come face to face with their deepest shadows.

🫂 Not through force, but by embracing their shadows, they begin to understand and face what was most hidden within them.

🪞 With the monsters growing quieter and the shadows more visible, the journey continues.

👤 How will our heroes find ways to collaborate now that more is out in the open? After the chaos, how will they find their way back home?
