Nose For A Cause

In collaboration with the Biology Department of Aegean College, our team alongside Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and geologist Georgios Lazaridis, organized a field presentation focused on cave biology and speleogenesis for a group of biology students.

During the excursion, we discussed how caves are formed through geological processes, how life adapts and evolves in complete darkness, and why cave-dwelling organisms represent some of the most specialized and fragile forms of biodiversity on Earth. We also highlighted the extreme sensitivity of subterranean ecosystems and the urgent need for their protection, as even small disturbances can permanently affect these isolated environments.

Caves are far more than empty voids beneath the surface. They are archives of geological history, reservoirs of biodiversity, and ecosystems that remain largely unexplored.

🐺Today our team recorded a road-killed female wolf (Canis lupus), and she was pregnant. 🛣️

Wolf gestation lasts about 63 days (~2 months) and births usually occur in spring (March–May) 🌱.
During this period, females often move more to locate safe denning areas and suitable habitat, which can increase the likelihood of road crossings, especially in landscapes where roads cut through natural corridors.

Roadkill is a major but often underestimated problem in Greece 🇬🇷.
It affects not only common species, but also key wildlife such as wolves, foxes, badgers, hedgehogs and many bird species 🦊🦡🦔🦅.
In many areas there is limited mitigation infrastructure (wildlife crossings, fencing, warning signs), meaning collisions continue to occur regularly.
Beyond the loss of individual animals, road mortality can reduce reproductive success and impact local populations over time 📉.

This is why documenting incidents matters: it helps identify hotspots and supports the need for targeted measures like wildlife crossings, better road planning, fencing in critical zones and driver awareness ✅.

🐺 Τι είναι το «Στο στόμα του λύκου»;

🐺Δεν είναι άλλο ένα vidcast/podcast με «10 τρόπους να μάθεις κάτι στον σκύλο σου».
Είναι μια σειρά που φιλοδοξεί να παρουσιάσει τον σκύλο αλλιώς:
ως είδος με ιστορία, βιολογία, συναίσθημα, ρόλο στην κοινωνία και στη σχέση μας με τη φύση.
🐺Ένα ταξίδι που ξεκινά από την εκπαίδευση και προχωρά στην επιστήμη, τη φιλοσοφία, την ηθική και τον ρόλο του ανθρώπου απέναντι σε ένα ζώο που δεν διάλεξε να ζει μαζί μας αλλά ζει, επειδή εμείς το αποφασίσαμε.

🔹 Τι θα ακούσεις στο 1ο επεισόδιο «Τι είναι σκύλος»:
🐺 την εξελικτική και ιστορική πορεία του σκύλου,
📜 αρχαιολογικές αναφορές από σπήλαια, τάφους και αρχαίους πολιτισμούς,
