📣ΚΕΦΑΛΟΝΙΑ:
Για 2η φορά βρεθήκαμε στην Κεφαλονιά, μετά την έκκληση για βοήθεια της κυρίας Κρήτης Θωμάτου, η οποία κάλυψε τη διαμονή και τα μεταφορικά μας, προκειμένου να πραγματοποιήσουμε αυτοψία, να δούμε από κοντά την κατάσταση και να συμβάλουμε στην αναζήτηση ουσιαστικών λύσεων.
⚠️🆘Αυτό που διαπιστώσαμε είναι ένα σοβαρό και διαρκώς διογκούμενο πρόβλημα.
🔸Άλογα που σε τίποτα πλέον δεν θυμίζουν - ΑΓΡΙΑ ΑΛΟΓΑ -
γιατί μεγάλωσαν και συναναστρέφονται συνεχώς με τον άνθρωπο.
🔸Άλογα που κάποτε υπήρξαν οικόσιτα και εγκαταλείφθηκαν γιατί υπάρχουν και τέτοια άλογα μέσα στα κοπάδια που συναντήσαμε.
🔸Άλογα που κυκλοφορούν ελεύθερα και ανεπιτήρητα σε κύριους δρόμους του νησιού και κατοικημένες περιοχές, θέτοντας σε κίνδυνο πάνω απ’ όλα τα ίδια τα ζώα, οδηγούς, κατοίκους και επισκέπτες.
❌Και όμως, στους δρόμους αυτούς δεν υπάρχει έστω ειδική προειδοποιητική σήμανση που να ενημερώνει τους οδηγούς ότι μπορεί να συναντήσουν ελεύθερα ανεπιτήρητα άλογα και μάλιστα σε κοπάδια!
Στις παρυφές του Υμηττού, στον δήμο Κορωπίου, όπου υπήρχε αντίστοιχο πρόβλημα, τοποθετήθηκαν σχετικές πινακίδες.
Γιατί στην Κεφαλονιά δεν έχει γίνει ούτε αυτό το αυτονόητο;
Γιατί δεν υπάρχει σωστή σήμανση (σωστές ταμπέλες, μεταφρασμένες και στα Αγγλικά) και μάλιστα σε ένα τόσο τουριστικό προορισμό;
⛔️Το πρόβλημα διαιωνίζεται εδώ και χρόνια και μεγαλώνει, καθώς τα άλογα συνεχίζουν να αναπαράγονται ανεξέλεγκτα.
❌Ακούμε για ποσά που φέρεται να έχουν εγκριθεί ή δαπανηθεί για τα άλογα της Κεφαλονιάς -που για να είμαστε ειλικρινείς τα θεωρούμε τεράστιες δαπάνες για το τίποτα-.
Και το πιο σημαντικό, το αποτέλεσμα παραμένει: το πρόβλημα υπάρχει και μεγαλώνει. Χρειάζεται πλέον ουσιαστική και μακροπρόθεσμη λύση.
ΜΙΑ ΛΥΣΗ ΠΟΥ ΠΑΝΤΑ ΠΡΕΠΕΙ ΝΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΜΕ ΓΝΩΜΟΜΑ ΤΗΝ ΕΥΖΩΙΑ ΤΩΝ ΑΛΟΓΩΝ.
🔸ΤΙ ΚΑΤΑΓΡΑΨΑΜΕ ΣΤΟΝ ΑΙΝΟ:
Θέλουμε να είμαστε ξεκάθαροι: η Help Horses Ymittos δεν έχει καμία πρόθεση να παρέμβει στην άγρια ζωή, συγκεκριμένα στα άλογα του Αίνου που είδαμε κατά την αυτοψία μας. Μάλιστα, στο σημείο όπου βρεθήκαμε αξίζει να αναφέρουμε ότι υπήρχε νερό για τα άλογα.
Αυτό που χρειάζεται είναι να στηριχθεί ο πληθυσμός τους και να προστατευθεί το φυσικό τους περιβάλλον. Παράλληλα, οι αρμόδιες αρχές πρέπει επιτέλους να αντιμετωπίσουν και την παράνομη βόσκηση ζώων μέσα στον Δρυμό και να έρθουν αντιμέτωποι με τους βοσκούς που κατά τα λεγόμενα κατοίκων, κάποιοι ευθύνονται που τα άλογα έφυγαν και κατέβηκαν στα πεδινά και μέσα στα χωριά.
✅ΥΠΑΡΧΕΙ ΛΥΣΗ - ΧΡΕΙΑΖΕΤΑΙ ΔΡΑΣΗ
Η Help Horses Ymittos συνεχίζει καθημερινά τον αγώνα για τα άλογα του Υμηττού. Παρά τις τεράστιες οικονομικές μας υποχρεώσεις και τον χρόνο που φυσικά δεν έχουμε, δεν μπορούμε να κλείσουμε τα μάτια σε ένα τόσο σοβαρό πρόβλημα.
Υπάρχει η θέληση.
Αν έχουμε στήριξη και πόρους μπορούμε να βοηθήσουμε στο ξεκίνημα με την τεχνογνωσία και στη συνέχεια να συνεχίσουν η άνθρωποι που έχουμε επιλέξει από το νησί.
Άνθρωποι που αγαπούν αυτά τα ζώα, άνθρωποι που έχουν πρόθεση να βοηθήσουν σε οτιδήποτε έχει να κάνει με την ασφάλεια και την ευζωία τους.
Άμεσα, θα καταθέσουμε νέα επιστολή προς την Περιφέρεια Ιονίων Νήσων, προτείνοντας κάποιες λύσεις για τα κοπάδια που βρίσκονται μέσα στα χωριά και κινούνται στους δρόμους -ΠΑΝΤΑ ΜΕ ΓΝΩΜΟΝΑ ΤΗΝ ΕΥΖΩΙΑ ΤΟΥΣ-
Να θυμήσουμε, η μοναδική δαπάνη που είχε αναλάβει η Περιφέρεια Αττικής για τα άλογα του Υμηττού ήταν οι χειρουργικοί ευνουχισμοί και η ομάδα μας πραγματοποίησε συνολικά 42 χειρουργικούς ευνουχισμούς με αποτέλεσμα να διακόψει την ανεξέλεγκτη αναπαραγωγή.
Η λύση, λοιπόν, μπορεί να ξεκινήσει.
Ωστόσο, τα μέλη της ομάδας μας δεν μπορούν να αφιερώσουν ιδιαίτερο χρόνο μιας και οι ανάγκες των άλογων του Υμηττού είναι τεράστιες.
Για να μπορέσουμε να βοηθήσουμε τα άλογα και την τοπική κοινωνία της Κεφαλονιάς, πρέπει πρώτα να εξασφαλίσουμε έστω τα απολύτως απαραίτητα για τα άλογα του Υμηττού , με πρώτο και βασικότερο την τροφή τους.
Δεν μας λείπει η θέληση.
Δεν μας λείπει η τεχνογνωσία.
Μας λείπουν οι πόροι για να μπορέσουμε να αφιερωθούμε και να στηρίξουμε και τα άλογα της Κεφαλονιάς.
Δεν υπάρχει άλλος χρόνος για αναμονή.
Με όλο τον σεβασμό προς όλους τους αρμόδιους φορείς, η ώρα για ουσιαστική δράση είναι τώρα.
Για τα άλογα.
Για τους ανθρώπους.
Για να μη χρειαστεί να θρηνήσουμε θύματα.

📣 KEFALONIA: A PROBLEM THAT CAN NO LONGER BE IGNORED
For the second time, we travelled to Kefalonia following an appeal for help from Ms Kriti Thomatou, who covered our travel and accommodation expenses so that we could assess the situation firsthand, understand the scale of the problem and contribute to finding meaningful, long-term solutions.
⚠️🆘 What we witnessed is a serious problem that continues to grow.
🔸 Horses that bear little resemblance to what we would consider WILD HORSES, having grown up in constant contact with humans.
🔸 Horses that were once domesticated but were later abandoned. These, too, are among the herds we encountered.
🔸 Horses roaming freely and unattended along the island’s main roads and through residential areas, putting their own lives at risk, as well as endangering drivers, residents and visitors.
❌ And yet, there are not even warning signs along these roads to alert drivers that they may encounter unattended horses roaming freely, sometimes in entire herds!
On the outskirts of Mount Hymettus, in the Municipality of Koropi, where a similar problem existed, warning signs were installed.
Why has not even this basic measure been taken in Kefalonia?
Why is there still no proper signage, with clear warning signs also translated into English, especially on such a popular tourist island?
⛔️ This problem has been allowed to persist for years, and it continues to escalate as the horses reproduce unchecked.
We hear about sums of money that have reportedly been approved or spent on Kefalonia’s horses. To be honest, we consider these enormous expenditures that have achieved little or nothing in terms of solving the problem.
And, most importantly, the outcome remains the same: the problem is still here, and it continues to grow.
A meaningful, long-term solution is now urgently needed.
A SOLUTION THAT MUST ALWAYS PUT THE WELFARE OF THE HORSES FIRST.
WHAT WE OBSERVED ON MOUNT AINOS
We want to be absolutely clear: Help Horses Ymittos has no intention of intervening in wildlife, specifically the wild horses of Mount Ainos that we observed during our field assessment.
It is also worth noting that there was water available for the horses at the location we visited.
What is needed is support for this horse population and protection of its natural habitat.
At the same time, the competent authorities must finally address the illegal grazing of livestock within the National Park and hold the responsible shepherds accountable. According to local residents, some of them are believed to be responsible for driving the horses away from the mountain and forcing them down into the lowlands and surrounding villages.
THERE IS A SOLUTION — WHAT IS NEEDED NOW IS ACTION
Help Horses Ymittos continues its daily struggle for the horses of Mount Hymettus.
Despite our enormous financial obligations and the very limited time we have available, we cannot turn a blind eye to such a serious problem.
The willingness to help is there.
With the necessary support and resources, we can help get things started by contributing our expertise. After that, the work can continue in the hands of people we have identified and chosen locally on the island.
People who genuinely care about these animals and are committed to helping with everything that concerns their safety and welfare.
In the coming days, we will submit a new letter to the Ionian Islands Regional Authority, putting forward possible solutions for the herds living in villages and roaming along the roads — ALWAYS WITH THEIR WELFARE AS OUR FIRST PRIORITY.
Let us remind you that the only expense undertaken by the Region of Attica for the horses of Mount Hymettus was funding surgical castrations. Our team carried out a total of 42 surgical castrations, successfully putting a stop to uncontrolled breeding.
So, a solution is possible. And it can begin now.
However, our team members cannot devote significant additional time to this effort, as the needs of the horses of Mount Hymettus are already enormous.
To be able to help the horses of Kefalonia and support the local community, we must first secure even the most basic necessities for the horses in our care on Mount Hymettus, with their feed being the most urgent and fundamental need.
We are not lacking the will to act.
We are not lacking the expertise.
What we lack are the resources that would allow us to dedicate ourselves to helping and supporting the horses of Kefalonia as well.
There is no more time to waste.
With full respect for all the authorities and organisations involved, the time for meaningful action is now.
For the horses.
For the people.
So that we do not have to mourn the loss of lives.
