GreenMove's Final Meeting in Valongo: A Lasting Legacy for Inclusive, Sustainable Mobility
The GreenMove consortium successfully concluded its 6th and final transnational meeting in Valongo, bringing together 17 partners from 16 countries to cement a powerful legacy for Europe's rural, coastal, and island communities.
Over three intensive days, we advanced the core theme:
“Empowering Women in Mountainous Regions through Mobility and Gender Equality.”
🎯 Key Outcomes & Strategic Decisions
✅ Universal Design Adopted as a Core Legacy
Inspired by the Municipality of Fano, the consortium unanimously adopted “Design for All” as a guiding principle for inclusive mobility planning – ensuring that infrastructure meets the needs of families, children, elderly citizens, and persons with disabilities.
✅ Municipality of Valongo’s Social Innovation Model Recognised as a European Best Practice
The Municipality of Valongo showcased its Social Innovation Department, demonstrating how citizen science, intergenerational solidarity (e.g., “YouTubeTrainers”), and targeted support for vulnerable groups can bridge generation gaps and foster real inclusion.
Finalisation of the Interactive Sustainable Living Guidebook (GISLG)
The sixth chapter – focused on gender equality, mountainous regions, and social inclusion – was completed, enriching a practical, open‑access resource for municipalities across Europe.
✅ Launch of the Permanent GreenMove Network
Building on the success of the CERV‑funded project, the consortium formalised a permanent European association of Citizen Science Observatories, ensuring collaboration, knowledge exchange, and advocacy continue well beyond the project’s lifetime.
✅ Pathway to Interreg Europe
The consortium confirmed its ambition to upscale the GreenMove methodology through an Interreg Europe proposal, focusing on policy learning, cross‑regional cooperation, and improving local governance instruments.
🌿 Cultural Immersion & European Solidarity
Between working sessions, participants experienced the best of Valongo and the Porto region:
A visit to Quinta das Arcas winery, where the Senior Dance Academy of Valongo performed traditional dances – a vibrant celebration of lifelong passion and community.
An interactive baking experience at the Oficina da Regueifa e do Biscoito (Bakery Museum), where partners from 16 countries made their own traditional cookies, connecting with local heritage in a hands‑on, joyful atmosphere.
💬 A Final Word
As stated by the consortium coordinator:“What we built in GreenMove is not just a set of tools – it is a movement. From the shores of Corfu to the mountains of Valongo, we have shown that citizens, municipalities, and EU values can together forge a more inclusive, sustainable, and democratic Europe.”
