🌍 FULAR Project | Circular Furniture

How circular is the furniture sector today?

Within the FULAR – Shaping new paths towards Furniture Circularity project, a transnational survey of 224 furniture SMEs across the Adriatic–Ionian region (🇬🇷 🇮🇹 🇸🇮 🇭🇷 🇷🇸 🇧🇦 🇦🇱) explored how companies apply circular economy practices in production.

Key findings:

🪵 Increasing use of CNC and digital design tools
♻️ Reuse of wood residues and production waste
🧩 Furniture designed for repair, disassembly & component replacement
🏭 Use of recycled materials such as MDF & particleboard
⚡ Waste used for energy production (pellets / biomass)

However, SMEs still face challenges such as high investment costs, limited availability of recycled materials, and uncertain market demand for sustainable furniture.

These insights will support the development of the FULAR Common Transnational Strategy, helping furniture companies move towards a more circular and resilient production model.

🌍♻️ FULAR Project – Sustainable Furniture Solutions 🛋️✨

The FULAR survey reveals that consumers recognize the importance of sustainability and circular economy in the furniture industry. 🌱🔄 Quality, durability, and longevity are key factors influencing their purchasing decisions, while price remains a major consideration.

🔎 What’s the key finding? Consumers want simple and clear information about sustainable products. Labels and packaging must explain recycling, reuse, and material safety. 💡

We’re ready to drive change in the furniture world! A shift toward more sustainable and circular production is near. 🔄🌍

FULAR participated in the IPA ADRION Implementation Seminar & Stakeholder Consultation in Bled 🇸🇮

From 22–24 October 2024, our team joined the IPA ADRION Implementation Seminar and Stakeholder Consultation in Bled, Slovenia — an event that brought together all project beneficiaries and key stakeholders from the IPA ADRION area.

✔️ On the first day we followed technical sessions on project implementation: reporting, financial & administrative procedures, public procurement rules, project modifications, and communication & visibility requirements.
✔️ On the second day we contributed to the consultation shaping the future of Interreg beyond 2027: breakout sessions, regional needs discussion, and planning future priorities.

Through events like this, FULAR continues to strengthen its commitment to circular, sustainable furniture production in the Adriatic–Ionian region.

📍 FULAR Project – First In-Person Meeting in Karditsa

On February 17–18, 2025, we hosted the first physical meeting of the “Shaping New Paths Towards Circularity in Furniture (FULAR)” project at the University of Thessaly, Department of Forestry, Wood Sciences and Design in Karditsa. Sixteen partners joined us on-site, while others participated online.

🌿 What is FULAR about?
The FULAR project promotes sustainability and circularity in the furniture sector across the IPA ADRION region (Greece, Italy, Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia). Its mission is to support SMEs in adopting greener, more circular production practices and aligning with EU sustainability strategies.

🔍 Key project activities include:
• researching how SMEs and consumers perceive circular practices,
• analyzing good practices and identifying sustainable materials (local timber, secondary raw materials, post-consumer waste),
• exploring innovative, cost-effective technologies for furniture manufacturing,
• organizing a circular design competition and three international workshops on materials engineering.

🛠️ Hands-on innovation
Winning design ideas will be turned into real prototypes, demonstrating practical and scalable circular solutions. Through the “Beyond FULAR” plan, results will be widely shared and transferred to industry and stakeholders.

👥 Who does FULAR target?
SMEs, academic institutions, policymakers, consumers, sectoral agencies, and all actors shaping the future of the furniture sector.

📅 What happened at the meeting?
Partners explored wood-recycling options and green technologies, joined technical workshops on sustainable materials, and discussed progress across the project’s work packages. The managing authority also provided guidance on reporting procedures.

✨ A big thank you to all participants for their collaboration and commitment to building a more circular furniture ecosystem in the Adriatic-Ionian region — and beyond. ♻️
