Hydrocephalus Society Founded in 2008, the Hydrocephalus Society is a nonprofit organization. Welcome to Hydrocephalus Society!

Its mission is to advance the art and science of the field of clinical care and research in hydrocephalus and CSF disorders and to promote the best possible care for such patients. Hydrocephalus Society was inaugurated in September 2008 and registered as a nonprofit organization in December of the same year. From the beginning, its mission has been to advance the art and science of the field of clinical care and research in hydrocephalus and CSF disorders, and thereby promote the best possible care for patients with these disorders. You are encouraged to join the Society to promote international exchanges, worldwide representation, and stimulating research and debate. Our successful meetings took place in Hannover, Germany, in 2008, Baltimore, Maryland, USA, in 2009, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, in 2010, Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2011, Kyoto, Japan in 2012, Athens, Greece, in 2013, Bristol, England, in 2014, Banff, Canada, in 2015, Cartagena, Colombia, in 2016, Kobe, Japan, in 2017, Bologna, Italy, in 2018 and Vancouver, Canada 2019. Due to COVID-19, the 2021 Annual Meeting will be held Virtually! the 2022 Meeting will take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, 2023 in Hamburg, Germany and 2024 in Nagoya, Japan!

The Hydrocephalus Society’s final day in Beijing, October 19th, was an International Academic Exchange on Hydrocephalus hosted at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), bringing the programme to a close with further scientific discussions and international collaboration.

The programme brought together hospital leaders, Chinese experts and international colleagues for scientific presentations and academic discussions, fostering knowledge exchange and strengthening collaboration in hydrocephalus research and clinical care.

The exchange was hosted by Prof. Jing Gao and Prof. Junji Wei, who also participated in the Hydrocephalus 2026 World Congress in São Paulo, Brazil.

The exchange featured presentations on clinical and research activities from PUMCH, Beijing Tiantan Hospital and Fudan University Huashan Hospital, followed by an international expert discussion on shared priorities and opportunities for future collaboration.

The programme also included a special visit to the PUMCH History Museum, offering participants an opportunity to explore the institution’s rich history and heritage.

The Hydrocephalus Society warmly thanks PUMCH for its hospitality and all participating Chinese and international experts for their valuable contributions, insightful discussions and commitment to advancing international cooperation in hydrocephalus research, education and patient care.

The Hydrocephalus Society was pleased to contribute to the 2026 Beijing Academic Conference on Neurodegenerative Diseases and Forum on Frontiers in Hydrocephalus, joining Chinese and international colleagues to share expertise and strengthen collaboration in hydrocephalus research and care.

Hydrocephalus Society President Giorgio Palandri addressed international advances and clinical challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), as well as the consensus, controversies, and priorities shaping the field.

President-Elect Sevil Yasar highlighted the importance of a geriatric approach to iNPH, including the role of comorbidities and patients’ broader health needs.

Secretary-Treasurer Fernando Gomes Pinto explored precision in hydrocephalus care, focusing on the characteristics of the ideal valve for iNPH.

Amir El Rahal discussed the clinical presentation and management of spontaneous intracranial hypotension, contributing perspectives on the recognition and treatment of this cerebrospinal fluid disorder.

Ondra Bradac presented functional MRI findings revealing expanded and reorganised motor networks in patients with iNPH, highlighting research into the condition’s effects on brain function.

Moshiur Rahman explored a framework for classifying endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) failure in paediatric obstructive hydrocephalus according to the timing of complications, offering a structured perspective on surgical outcomes and complications.

The wider programme also highlighted developments across China’s hydrocephalus community, including progress reports from Hydrocephalus Alliance Centers and the inauguration of the Consultation Center for Complex Hydrocephalus and Related Neurodegenerative Diseases at Peking University International Hospital. An Outstanding Paper Award Ceremony recognized scientific contributions within the broader conference.

Building on our institutional visits and meetings, exchanges with the Beijing Neurodegenerative Disease Society, Peking University International Hospital, and Beijing’s scientific community provided opportunities to explore future academic cooperation and strengthen international partnerships.

We warmly thank our hosts, Professor Yan Xing, and all participating colleagues for their hospitality and exchange of knowledge. We look forward to building on these connections to advance hydrocephalus research, education, and patient care worldwide.

On October 16, 2026, a delegation from the Hydrocephalus Society visited Peking University International Hospital (PKUIH) in Beijing in view of their participation in the 2026 Beijing Neurodegenerative Disease Academic Conference and the Forum on Frontier Progress in Hydrocephalus.

The delegation led by Hydrocephalus Society President Giorgio Palandri, alongside Board Members and Office holders, and representatives of the Beijing Neurodegenerative Disease Society (BNDS) was welcomed by PKUIH President Xiaoguang Liu, BNDS President Yanfeng Li, and Professor Yan Xing.

During a guided tour of the hospital’s Neuro-medical Center, delegates exchanged clinical expertise, learned about the center’s ongoing development, and discussed potential international academic collaborations, including joint centers dedicated to hydrocephalus and related neurodegenerative conditions.

Additionally, Hydrocephalus Society leadership including President Giorgio Palandri, President-Elect Sevil Yasar, and Secretary-Treasurer Fernando Gomes Pinto met with representatives from the Beijing Association for Science and Technology (BAST) at the China National Convention Center (CNCC).

During this meeting, BNDS outlined its progress and formal interest in hosting a future Hydrocephalus World Congress in Beijing. Representatives from BAST and the Beijing Municipal Foreign Affairs Office detailed support initiatives aimed at fostering international scientific and technological partnerships in the capital.

These engagements mark a key milestone in expanding global partnerships and advancing international collaboration across hydrocephalus research, clinical care, and education.

In the days to follow, the Hydrocephalus Society will participate with Keynote Lectures and Roundtables in the International Hydrocephalus Frontier Forum, that will be held in the context of the 2026 Beijing Academic Conference on Neurodegenerative Diseases and Forum on Frontiers in Hydrocephalus.
